What do I think?
I think that the book and the series starts with a WHAM. Izzy, the heroine is in an abusive marriage and wants to get away. After six years, she manages with the help of her best friend, Dee. Their duo becomes a trio when Greg Cage joins them. He becomes the brother neither of them had.
The prologue just about guts a person. Then, it gets better. The years pass and we get glimpses of Izzy's memories with a certain boy, one she loved wholeheartedly but had to let go.
I had a tiny hunch that Axel may be among Greg's ex-Marine friends but still wasn't expecting Izzy to react like that.
I couldn't decide whether I liked her or not. Yes, there were a lot of misunderstandings and people had tried keeping them apart - and had succeeded - but still, she should have talked to Axel.
Axel. Whoa. Big. Muscled. Mean. Badass.
That is, until I read about a guy named Maddox Locke. Hmmm. I have a thing for this name, Maddox. One of Gena Showalter's Lords is Maddox. Kit Rocha have a Maddox of their own too, in the Beyond series.
But enough about other Maddox's. This one tops them all.
"Maddox is his [Zeke] polar opposite. He has just as many muscles, but on him they look huge and imposing [mmmmhmmmm]. His brown hair is longer than Zeke's, [the kind you can weave your fingers through and hold on for the ride] sporting that messy look like he had been running his hands through it all day; sex hair. [YES!] His face is hard, but friendly in a weird combination that he just seems to work. But it is his eyes that hold me captive [me too]; they are so dark they look black and bottomless."
-----> And WHAM! I fell. Hard.
If Greg is the kind of guy a girl would want to have as a friend, Maddox is the kind of guy you'd like to have in the bedroom. Heck, in your house. Everywhere. He's mysterious and alluring but keeps to himself. He takes Izzy in when she needs a place to stay and becomes a good friend of hers.
But back to the plot. Got side-tracked there, a little.
Bam, when you think things work out? Nope. You're smacked upside the head with another nasty situation. When you think all's well and what the heck could go wrong, the heck goes wrong.
But because the only way of getting rid of Brandon Hunter is to kill the bastard, that's what happens. Izzy delivers, for the all pain and crap she's been through because of him.
Sayonara, mothereffer.
A few years later, Izzy and Axel have their baby boy, Nathaniel. The next generation of Alpha, if you ask me.
Throughout the novel, we get glimpses of Dee and Beck; Emmy and Maddox. All those teasers? Driving me crazy.
But I'm happy to have discovered Harper Sloan and I'm glad she started writing a series about strong women, badass men with strong friendships and love.
