“Lena, you seen my old black Led Zep shirt?”
“Nope.”
“You sure?” His brows became one dark
cranky line. The scratches on his face were healing well, thank goodness.
Though it didn’t reduce my desire to throttle his mother on a daily basis.
“Yes. I haven’t seen it.”
Can’t find it anywhere…”
“And this is a surprise, how?” I slipped
my hands into my back jean’s pockets. “Jimmy, you own more clothing than Cher,
Brittney, and Elvis, put together. Things are bound to go missing.”
“Sure you haven’t seen it?”
“For goodness sake, what do you think,
Jimmy? That I stole it to sleep in or something?” I laughed bitterly. Sure as
hell, the truth deserved a good mocking. I’d sunk so despicably low.
I hadn’t even meant to steal the stupid
thing, but the shirt had been mixed up with my laundry a few days ago. It’d
been the first top I laid my hand on after stepping out of the shower, ready to
go to bed. Without thought, I’d put it on and it’d been so soft, the scent of
him lingering beneath the laundry detergent. Every night since, I’d found
myself in it come bedtime. My shame knew no limits. And no, I still hadn’t
quit. The words still hadn’t come even close to leaving my mouth.
He frowned. “No.”
“That I have some deep secret longing to
feel close to you resulting in my stealing your shirt like some creepy perv?”
“Course I don’t fucking think that,” he
replied crankily, reaching up to grip the top of the doorframe. All of his
bulging muscles stretched the arms of his white T-shirt in the nicest way. It
was all I could do not to start drooling, my heart beat taking up residence
somewhere down between my thighs. And who could blame it? Not me. Maybe if I
got laid, this would go away and things would return to normal. It’d seemed
safer to avoid rubbing up against any men just in case I got carried away and
started dating again. This new situation, however, changed everything.
“Well, of course not! That would be
crazy.” And wasn’t that the god’s honest truth? Cray-zeee. Lock me up and throw
away the key because it wasn’t like I didn’t know better.
“Just can’t figure out where the hell it
could be.”
Angels couldn’t have smiled as innocently.
They might have tried, but they would have failed, the dirty-mouthed, winged,
little liars. “Jimmy, I don’t know where it is. But I’ll look around for it
later, okay?”
“Yeah,” he said, and then added as an
afterthought, “and stop looking at me weird.”
“I’m not!”

Heart's A Mess
Review
“The music biz will be fun they said. It’ll be glamorous they said. They lied.”
Jimmy Ferris, damn your hot, moody rock star ass. Damn you for making me fall in love with you, right alongside Lena. Damn you for dethroning your brother.
Where to start, now that I’ve gotten that off my chest? Well, we’ve met Lena and Jimmy already. Lena in Play, the second Stage Dive novel and Jimmy in Lick, the very first one. Where he was a bastard I didn’t like very much. All right, so I may have hated him. He was a mean mofo. But. Yes, the but. He was an addict because he didn’t know better. He was an alcoholic because he thought there wouldn’t be any better. He fucked up. That was the nature of Jimmy Ferris. He’d fuck up because that’s what people expected of him. He’d appear in magazines wasted or passed out because that’s what the fans knew he was good at.
My heart broke for him. I ached for him. Because in Lead, we find out the true reasons behind his erratic behavior, behind his addictions. There stands the one person that should always be there for you, no matter what, offering unconditional love and support. Not the case of the Ferris brothers. Jimmy had managed to somewhat shelter David from their mother and her addictions but he saw things that marked him, scarred him.
But he wises up and does what’s right but it’s hard, especially when everyone is expecting him to fall apart again. That’s where Lena comes in. She was a simple secretary, yet she somehow got roped into becoming his counselor/assistant, having the duty of keeping an eye on him, not leaving him alone and to relapse. I liked Lena, loved her, actually. There were times when I wanted to smack her upside the head, same with Jimmy. He had me feeling so many things! I sighed, I swooned, I got pissed but I fell, and I fell hard, all the same. Lena’s good for him. She’s perfect but he’s afraid so, there you go, the reason why I was pissed. They were driving me crazy.
“Though to be fair, he could put a lot of emotion into a grunt, quite a variation of tone and character. The way Jimmy did it, it was almost a sentence, a story. He turned being a caveman into an art form.”
This one really is different from the previous two. It shows a journey, a slow one, our main characters are taking, somewhat together, yet separately as well. Jimmy changes, gradually, thanks to Lena and Lena does too. She goes from having no friends – she hasn’t seen her family in a year, due to a nasty situation involving her sister – to having a family in the Stage Dive group.
“You okay?” I asked.
A nod.
“Feeling a little emotional, huh?” I petted his hair. “That’s okay. It was an emotional blow job.”
He snorted.
Ms. Kylie Scott did a fantastic job, bringing these two together. At first glance, they are different, worlds apart, but if you look close enough, not to mention deep down, you see just how alike they are. 5 stars. I can’t even imagine giving this book less, given the emotions I’ve felt; I was right there with the characters, feeling what they felt.
A rare smile. “I love you, Lena.”
“About fucking time, Jimmy.” I grinned.
I was ready to drink in celebration when that happened.
P.S. Mal is just as crazy as ever, guaranteed to give the reader a break from the intense emotions by making them laugh. Oh and Ben and Lizzy? January is too damn far away.
