Galloway and Estelle are thrown together on a flight; they are in route to make some life changes and are hopeful for some new beginnings. They definitely get a new life for themselves but not in the way they expected and it changes them forever. I hesitate to say too much because you should go in as blind as you can but their story spans eight years and it is a turbulent ride. The book is filled with danger, passion, loss, hope, and love. You should dive into it and enjoy the ride, flipping the pages in anticipation of what will happen next made it all the more exciting to read.
The beginning of their story sucked me in and I was pretty much riveted all the way to the end. This book is really long but I still read it in about two days. It was a bit slow in some parts with the day to day events. Part of me wanted it to speed up but if I am being honest I was also truly fascinated with what was happening and how they were surviving. I realized I was tensing up a lot too. I was scared for the characters and so hopeful for them. I went through a lot of emotions reading this book; frustration, hope, heartbreak, and happiness. I felt every high and low the characters had, and every happy and sad moment they had.
The first half of the book Galloway was a struggle for me. He is a man with a past that has made him completely insecure and fills him with self-loathing. This insecurity bled into everything that was happening between him and Estelle as well as the circumstances they were in. At times he was too much, but all the characters in the story grow and change and so does Galloway. In the end I saw him as incredibly strong, resilient, and brave. Estelle was like superwoman, she was strong, nurturing, fearless, and loyal. In reality this is who she was deep down but she also had to be the savior and remain the glue that kept them all together.
I really loved how Ms. Winters wrapped up the story. Even though I wanted a different outcome for one character (and I was heartbroken) I still loved how this story ended. This was a great story of learning to survive with not only the things surrounding you but the people you make your family.
