Five Reasons You Should Totally Read J.M. Darhower's Mafia Books

Just in case you've never heard of J.M. Darhower, or read any book of hers - I recommend just about anything she wrote, really - but here are FIVE reasons you should read her MAFIA books. That's right, you read that correctly, Mafia books.

I, for one, think she's the best at writing this genre but I may be biased.

#1. Corrado Moretti. Ignazio Vitale. Both of these men are dangerous. They're killers. No questions asked. But they're fierce and loyal and oh my God, do they love their women!

“Because God knows, if He ever took Celia from me, I'd burn the world down around us all.” --- Corrado

"I'll always come for you," I tell her. "The fucking devil himself couldn't stop me." --- Naz

#2. As I said, she writes this genre like no other. It's real, it's scary to think it's actually out there. There's no coddling, or sugarcoating. There's slavery, backstabbing and, in the end, everyone wants to be Boss.

#3. The style is unique and pulls you right in. Even though both series are Mafia, it's not the same story, recycled.

#4. The female characters. Many say about Naz's girl, Karissa, that she's childish. Bear in mind, she's nineteen, she's led a different life, because of her mom. I won't say more, decide for yourself. I, for one, loved her. As for Celia, Corrado's wife, she's the perfect match for him. Given their situation, the life they're leading, she trusts her husband and knows he loves her, no matter what.

#5. The ending to the books/series. I expected both because, as I said, they're realistic. No fairy tale here.

So, there you go. Truth be told, one doesn't need five reasons, but maybe they will sway you into giving them a chance.

I seriously think Cat topped Random & Rare for me. It’s so close, like neck and neck, I am so torn! Blood & Rust exceeded my expectations and frankly I am in awe of Ms. Porter’s talent. I have screamed from the roof tops for quite some time about how much I love this series. The attention to detail is astounding and it is done so beautifully. Ms. Porter knows how to “take you there” in her writing without bogging the story down. Another plus in this series is the older characters; I love reading about people around my age that I can relate to. These people are honest about who they are, they have learned the hard lessons of youth, and are done with games. Butler and Tania were made for each other and they were meant to come together at this point in their lives.

I have fallen in love with every one of the heroes in the Lock & Key series and from Butler’s introduction in book one I was hooked. He has suffered through tremendous loss and overcome addiction so he has definitely come a long way. He started his path to redemption in Iron & Bone and in Blood & Rust he is finding his way back home to the Jacks. He crosses paths with Tania (Grace’s bestie) and this starts their journey. I was so surprised by the history these two had. In their youth they weren’t right for each other but now that Butler has overcome some of his battles, and Tania has walked away from her marriage, they are ready. But of course there are some obstacles in their way.

Tania was a truly fabulous character. I freaking love the heroines in this series; they are strong, fierce, and not afraid to go for what they want. Tania is coming to the end of her marriage. In reality it was over long ago but she is done. She is ready to give her all to fulfilling her dream of opening her own shop and doing what she wants to do with no apologies. I loved the progression of Butler and Tania’s slow burn romance. The sexual tension about killed me with these two but it was worth the wait. One of the most surprising and wonderful aspects of the story was Tania’s connection to Finger. I freaking loved their relationship and I am dying to know more about Finger.

I don’t think there is anything better for me as a reader to find a series that pulls me in and won’t let go. I devoured Butler and Tania’s story and immediately dove back in to re-read some scenes. I highlighted like crazy and messaged my review partners to discuss. The story was executed so well and had so much good stuff I couldn’t possibly list it all. It is rich, vibrant, and I ate up every word and greedily wanted more. Seriously, I can’t say enough about this series and Ms. Porter’s writing. BRAVO!!

P.S. I have claimed this book as mine. There were several things that spoke to me in the story and If you keep an eye out you might spot my cameo * wink wink *. So…..back off girls! Hahahaha!!

AMY 5 STARS

Yes, yes, yes.....to everything in this book! Butler is redeemed so fully, at least in my opinion. There were so, so many lines that I highlighted, so many things that I just treasure about the way his story played out. His connection to Tania really made him re-evaluate how he was "living" and made him want to more than just exist.

And Tania....seriously, she is definitely one of my favorite female characters from a book. She is strong, but vulnerable; sturdy, yet fragile; and she is fierce when she needs to be. We get just a bit of her history and the way she's gone about her life since leaving Meager. We all know she's loyal, but I think you really get a sense of her depth of loyalty in this book, especially with the secrets she's been keeping.

Of course, we also get to see all of our favorites: Boner and Jill; Rae; Catch (Tanya's brother); and Grace and Lock. Lemme tell ya.....Lock's speech at his son's christening made me love him even more; the meaning behind their son's name was special and completely fitting to their lives.

This book just floored me....and if I'm being completely honest, I think it's my favorite in the series. Well done, Cat!

IZA 5 STARS

There is a very good reason why Cat Porter is one of my absolute favorites; why she quickly made the top of my list - top five, to be precise. This woman, this amazing woman always manages to give me all the feels with her books, whether it's a biker that tells us how much he loved his old lady but is happy that she found another to love her, after his passing - yes, Random & Rare, the book that made me bawl like a baby for hours after finishing - or a mysterious Lord from a Gothic romance that gives you the chills, just like a Bronte hero or makes you swoon, like an Austen one - Wolfsgate.

I've been waiting to read Butler's book since last October, when I stumbled upon him and fell in love with the character that was more than a biker who did drugs; the biker that thought he loved a fellow biker's old lady. There was so much more to him, I couldn't wait to have the layers peeled off.

Granted, it took a while, but slowly, with each book written, I got more and more, and oh my God, I still want more, even after reading Blood & Rust!

You see, this is not like the previous books. It's different. We get the good, the bad, the ugly and the horrible. We get the story of two people that heal one another. We get the happily-ever-after, of course, but the road is a long one. This one is a slow burn and I wouldn't imagine it any other way.

Butler came a long way, a very long way. You can see, feel his struggle because it's not over. I think that's one of the things I love about Cat's books, about her writing. She doesn't sugarcoat anything, she writes it as it is, as it would be in real life, no matter how much it hurts to read about it. And believe me, it hurts. Butler's story, his background, his past and present will gut you.

But Tania didn't have it easier and my God, do I have a major girl crush on her! She has to be my absolute fave female character ever. She's strong and no matter what, if she gets knocked on her ass, she doesn't stay down, she gets right back up. I cheered for her and Butler like crazy because they were made for each other; you can't find two characters that fit more together than these two. Don't get me wrong, I love the other couples too and we get quite a lot of scenes with the others, but these two? Definite relationship goals. Like soul-mates. Their story actually makes you believe in soul-mates, no matter how cynical you are. Like this girl, for example!

Okay, this became a long one. Here are a few favorite quotes that I loved and will forever remember:

"You deserve a man crowning you." --- Butler <---SEE why I love him so much? #RuinedbyButler

"Tall, muscular, blond, and blue-eyed, a sparkle of audacity and vulgar ever present in the lick of his gaze. Every girl's wet dream." --- my dirty Adonis and my dream guy!

In conclusion, yes, I LOVED IT, I'm giving it 5+++ stars, I cannot wait to get the paperback to pet it and get it signed, and I cannot recommend it enough. You'd be missing out if you were to pass this book. Pure awesomeness. I want to thank the author for the copy given in exchange for my honest review. It was my absolute pleasure.

**Enjoy a sneak peek into Law's book!!!**
LAW. Helicopters. The sound of rotor blades haunted him. Sometimes, they were deafening. He could be standing in a crowded market in Bangkok, and all he would hear is womp womp womp. Kingsley had joined the military at the tender age of seventeen. Some forged paperwork and a couple fake IDs, and he got right in – he knew punishment and discovery was inevitable, but none of it could be as bad as his home life. His step-father took discipline very seriously, and though Kingsley had been over six feet tall since Year Six, he was a string bean. Putting on weight was impossible for him, even though he ate like a horse. His step-father was a local boxing champion, a skill he liked to use often to prove his points. The military could provide an income, schooling, a chance to travel, and most importantly – would teach him how to properly defend himself. How to make sure no one could ever treat him like that again. What he'd never expected, though, was to take to it like a duck to water. He'd signed up for simple infantry, but showed such an aptitude for marksmanship, he was moved up through the ranks to sniper quickly. By the time it was discovered that he'd lied about his age, no one cared. He was too good at his job. And not just shooting. He took to almost everything well. A childhood love for Aikido stayed with him, and he became a high degree black belt. His aptitude for stealth and his above average intellect caused his higher ups to push him towards the intelligence side of the military. He was introduced to the wonders that were SIS – formerly MI6. British intelligence and secret service. He traveled all over the world. Received training – and gave it – at prestigious places like Quantico and Langley, did tours all over Europe. Then the war on terror went to a whole new level. At the time, Kingsley had been part of an elite group of soldiers and special agents that were concentrating on gathering information about Al Qaeda. They were instructed to use “any means necessary” – a work ethic that would prove to stick with him later in life. They were stationed in Afghanistan, operating primarily out of Camp Bastion. It was conjoined with an American military base, the famed Camp Leatherneck. There was a lot of good-natured rivalry going on between the two bases, and while Kingsley enjoyed the rowdy Americans, he kept to himself for the most part. Obviously, there was an airfield at the base, and all manner of airplanes and jets were taking off, all the time. But for some reason, the helicopters stood out the most for him. He enjoyed helicopters, had received training on several models, and liked to fly in them. One day, he returned from a fact finding mission and he'd been walking across the base when a Westland Lynx helicopter had flown low over him. A little unusual. He'd lifted his eyes to watch it, squinting in the setting sun, totally not paying attention to anything going on in front of him. “Watch it!” But the warning came too late. He rammed into someone, completely bowling them over. He came to a stop, looking down at his feet. “Sorry.” She was tiny. Even sprawled out on the ground, he could tell; being somewhat of a giant, he was a good judge of size. He bent down and held out his hand, and though she glared at him, she took it and pulled herself to her feet. He smiled to himself. The pixie in front of him would be lucky if she was even brushing five-foot-two. “Do you always walk around without looking where you're going?” she snapped, dusting herself off. She had an American accent and was wearing a white lab coat over faded green scrubs. “Only when I feel like making new friends,” he teased. She glanced up at him, then went back to cleaning herself off. “Pity it didn't work this time.” “Oh, I don't know. I'm feeling very friendly.” “Watch it, soldier. I outrank you.” “Different countries, love, doesn't count. We're technically peers. Fancy a drink?” “No. Now get out of my way.” He laughed as she pushed past him. She was little, but feisty. He wondered what her gig was, what had brought her to Afghanistan. “The name's Law!” he yelled out at her form as she hurried across the pavement. “Good for you!” “And you are!?” “Someone who doesn't want to be your friend!” He laughed until she'd disappeared from sight.

Crazy woman living in an undisclosed location in Alaska (where the need for a creative mind is a necessity!), I have been writing since ..., forever? Yeah, that sounds about right. I have been told that I remind people of Lucille Ball - I also see shades of Jennifer Saunders, and Denis Leary. So basically, I laugh a lot, I'm clumsy a lot, and I say the F-word A LOT.
I like dogs more than I like most people, and I don't trust anyone who doesn't drink. No, I do not live in an igloo, and no, the sun does not set for six months out of the year, there's your Alaska lesson for the day. I have mermaid hair - both a curse and a blessing - and most of the time I talk so fast, even I can't understand me.
Yeah. I think that about sums me up.

I'm not a good man.
I'm not a bad man.
But I've made some bad mistakes, made the wrong choices.
Who hasn't? But the consequences are tearing us apart.

I love two people.
I love them differently.
The world tells me I have to choose. Why? Why do I have to choose?
Loving hurts. Dancing heals.

Love makes you soar, makes you fly and sets you free—and then it lets you freefall until you're smashed and bleeding on the ground. Ultimately, love is the worst thing that can happen to a human being.

Im my opinion.
I love two people.
I love them differently.
One is a man.
One is a woman.
And they are brother and sister.

**** A stand alone novel in the best-selling Rhythm Series. ****
AP new - excerpt.jpg

“Two minutes to curtain,” called out the stage manager.
We all hustled to take our places for the first number, and Ash walked with Laney as she wheeled herself to a spot where she could watch from the wings.
I felt a shiver of anticipation skitter across my skin, and I stretched my arms over my head before shaking them out, keeping flexible, keeping moving.
“God, I’ll never get enough of this,” whispered Sarah. “I hate it and I love it.”
I knew exactly what she meant. The nerves never really stopped, but the second I stepped on stage, adrenaline and muscle memory took over. My body would respond before my brain felt the fear of dancing in front of a thousand strangers.
I could hear the audience, hear their breaths, feel their excitement, feel the heat rolling forward from the press of bodies.
And then the house lights sank and the theater dropped into darkness, the electricity of expectancy lighting a fuse.
Al, the conductor, tapped his baton, and there was a collective breath as the band prepared to play, fingers hovering above keys and strings, the drummer poised, tension in his arms.
Then the music blasted out in an explosion of sound and light, and I was on stage, alive, powerful, doing what I was born to do.
I became the role, I lived the dance, blood pounding through my veins, my muscles coiled and released as I lunged and leapt, my arms sweeping through the space around me, filling it with spirals of strength and emotion.
Nothing could beat this feeling, this intensity, this desire to drink from the well of life.
And it was magnificent.
For a split second, I caught Ash’s eye, and we shared something that only another dancer can understand—a connection, an emotion so fleeting, I could have dreamed it.
I feel it too, brother.
Two hours later, we stood bathed in sweat under the bright stage lights, smiles on our faces and tears in our eyes, soaking up applause as the crowd rose to their feet, cheers and whistles soaring above the roar. My chest heaved from the exertion, but also from the deep emotion that dancing always brought to me, and I knew that everyone on this stage felt the exact same way.
Sarah stood next to me, tears running down her face, happy tears; tears of achievement and joy; tears of satisfaction and sorrow that it was all over. The end of a performance was a birth—the memories of the audience would live on—and a death, too, as another show ended. So tonight, we were celebrating and grieving.
“I’m going to miss this so fucking much,” she sobbed, staring up at me, then out at the cheering crowd. “God, I’m going to miss you, Luka, you bloody great hunk of sexy Slovenian.”
“I’ll miss you too, buča,” I said sincerely, leaning down to kiss her cheek, tasting the salt of her tears.
All the dancers linked hands, raising our arms in the air as we took our final bow. Ash stepped forward, looking down at the band and applauding them, too. Then he clasped his hands together and pressed them to his heart, before waving to the audience and leaving the stage.
Yveta, Gary and Oliver stepped forward with me and Sarah to take our bows as co-leads, then we too left the stage.
And it was all over.
The applause drained away as the curtain fell for the last time and the house lights came up.
Then it was the slow descent to normalcy as we peeled away the roles we’d played, along with our costumes, wigs and makeup.

Luka by Jane Harvey-Berrick
Review/Jan Hoodlum
June 19  2016

We have returned, back into the dance world of Book 1, Slave to the Rhythm. We are reunited with Ash, Laney, Yveta, Gary, Sarah and Luka. Their performances in London are about to end, leaving several months until they reunite in Chicago to begin their new tour. Luka will remain in London, staying in Sarah’s flat while she travels. And so begins Luka’s story.
This was a story of strength and growth and self-understanding. People and situations and true emotions are put in Luka’s path, and as he maneuvers through them you see him becoming his true self. Such a difficult journey, complicated and unexpected, forcing him to make choices he never could have imagined. Love triangle, MM, MF – none of that worried me. I fell for Luka and wanted him to break through his preconception of what love is. He found love in the end, and not in the way I initially expected.
It was difficult for me to understand what Luka saw in Sarah. I found her to be rather childish, and there was an underlying current of instability and with her. I also had a hard time with Seth as he seemed unwilling to compromise on what his image was, expecting Luka to hide certain things about himself. Sarah and Seth (and their dragon lady mother) did some truly mean-spirited things against Luka, and I wanted him to see that more clearly. But then again, those were the actions that made him see who they really were in the end.
A revelation was Yveta. Wise and insightful, cautious and damaged. A light in Luka’s life. I’d like to see more of her transformation.
The writing and storytelling, as with all this author’s prior work, is excellent. I keep pushing her higher and higher up my “favorites” pedestal. I was quite emotional at several points, and for a moment my heart just cracked open. But just as in real life, it’s going to take a while for that heart to mend because Luka’s story goes on.

4 stars ****
