Synopsis:
Welcome to Wynne, population 3,401.
No billionaires. No professional athletes. No celebrities.
In this small town, current events are pondered in mirrors at the local salon or around crowded tables at the diner, and there’s a new couple to gossip about. A rough and tumble woman who works in her dad’s garage, not yet ready to spread her wings, shows the new guy in town what it’s like to finally have roots.
It’s your run-of-the-mill, sexy, Astro van driving dentist meets smart-ass, bass fishing tomboy in a story of real-life romance.
Low on drama. High on love.
Pull up a chair and stay a while.

Roots and
Wings is one of those stories that just makes you feel good. It's light and has minimal amounts of drama,
which is something I occasionally crave in a book. This is the story of Mutt and Vaughn. Mutt has gotten this nickname due to her
mother's reputation, although her mother left when she was 2 months old and she
was raised by her father.
Mutt is pretty
ideal for a heroine; she's feisty, she's independent, and she's refuses to
change who she is to meet someone else's idea of what a woman she be. She works in her Dad's service garage, and
makes fishing lures on the sides. She's
definitely not a girly-girl, and prefers to spend her time fishing.
Vaughn is new
to town, having bought the Dental practice from the soon-to-retire dentist in
town. And the rumors are flying about how his girlfriend left him right before
he moved. Vaughn is looking to makes
roots in a small town, not liking the big city life anymore. He's quite laid back and really just wants a
nice, slowed-down pace of life that a small town can offer.
Mutt and
Vaughn meet on his first day in town while at the diner. The diner is closed, but Mutt offers him half
her sandwich and fries, as she can tell he's hungry and doesn't anticipate
eating it all, anyway. The next day,
Mutt decides to be neighborly and brings him some items from the grocery store,
knowing that he probably doesn't have much on hand. From there, they begin to build a friendship
first, mostly by her helping him with refreshing his house by painting and
helping him set things up.
Eventually,
the both concede that there is something more than friendship going on, and
Vaughn is determined to discover her name, as he despises when people call her
Mutt; for now he calls her by her last name, O'Fallon. He tells her he won't kiss her until he
guesses her first name correctly, which was a fun little game for both of
them. Eventually the name is revealed
and he starts calling her by her given name.
This story was
sweet and a bit refreshing, as I was engaged in the story throughout its plot
line, without having excessive drama or unnecessary plot twists. It's a feel-good, sweet romance that I enjoy
occasionally. The writing was done well
and I really enjoyed this friends-to-lovers romance.
This was my
first book by M. Mabie, but I definitely look forward to reading more from her.
You know those books you look for when you need a break from angst, dark reads, or just need a light fast read? Well Roots and Wings is that book; it is a completely endearing small town romance.
Our heroine Mutt is a rough around the edges girl who helps her dad at his shop and loves to fish. Mutt seems content with her life and doesn’t seem to be missing anything. This all changes with the arrival of Vaughn the new dentist in town. Vaughn is a city boy looking for the small town life. He is looking for a fresh start and is hoping this move and new job will bring good things for him.
The pair develop a friendship while Mutt helps Vaughn paint his house and they soon realize they are starting to feel more. Mutt is a completely endearing character; she is very strong, happy, and independent but she is surprised to discover she might be missing out. She doesn’t really believe Vaughn would be interested in a tomboy like her but Vaughn shows her that he sees more in her. I loved seeing Mutt bloom and realize that she wanted to be a girl sometimes. Vaughn truly made her comfortable and cared about her interests. I loved that Vaughn made it so Mutt didn’t feel the need change for him but she realized he enhanced her life.
This was a really sweet romance with no angst. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It made me laugh and feel warm and fuzzy without coming off as too cheesy. I am looking forward to more in this series.

Who is M. Mabie?
M. Mabie lives in Illinois with her husband. She is the author of the steamy comedy Fade In. Her sophomore release, Bait, is the first book in the angst-filled erotic Wake Series. She writes unconventional love stories and tries to embody "real-life romance."
She cares about politics, but will not discuss them in public. She uses the same fork at every meal, watches Wayne's World while cleaning, and lets her dog sleep on her head. She has always been a writer. In fact, she was born with a pen in her hand, which almost never happens. Almost.
M. Mabie usually doesn't speak in third-person. She promises.
