September 11, 1973: Eleven-year-old Alejandro Penda watches from his apartment window as Santiago, Chile falls to a military coup, destroying his family and his childhood. Arriving alone in America, he’s taken in by the Larks: a prominent family in the town of Guelisten. Though burdened by unresolved grief for his disappeared parents, he becomes fiercely loyal to the Larks, eventually marrying one of their daughters, Valerie.
September 11, 2001: Javier Landes watches from his apartment window as New York City falls to terrorism. As one of Manhattan’s top-paid male escorts, this professional lover has never lacked for company and is loyal only to himself. But in the wake of 9/11, Jav is named guardian for an orphaned nephew in Guelisten and must open his carefully-guarded heart to pain he's long suppressed.
Alex, Valerie and Jav meet first in their twenties, with a sudden attraction each finds strange and compelling. When they meet again in their forties, they discover not only is their bond still strong, but their life experiences are strangely similar. All have been shaped by separate 9/11's, and their unfinished business from the past will change everything they know about love, loyalty and friendship.
"Life has rules. You cannot come in the middle of the night and take what we agreed isn't yours."

I loved everything about this book - the incredible detail, the original storyline, the feels, and especially the characters. Laqueur outdid herself. I'm impressed as hell. She has quickly become my fave author of 2016.
It's a beautiful story of friendship and acceptance and family of your own making. I thought the ending was perfection. It made me smile. I wish I had better words. It was simply amazing.

This book was simply amazing. I feel like I don't have adequate words to express my love for this story. An Exaltation of Larks is a fascinating exploration of what makes a family, sexuality, friendship, loyalty, and love. I am a reader that didn't think she was really into family sagas. I was clearly wrong; well at least when it comes to this book. This story spans decades and weaves the lives of a couple and a male escort. The look into the friendship between these three and the love they shared kept me riveted. Beyond the three main characters you will be just as invested in the other players in this story.
To me this story was so raw and real. I felt like these people were real and that I had to know them. I want to know them. While the ending of this book left me hopeful especially for Jav it wasn't enough. I selfishly want more and Jav clearly has more story to tell. So I will cross my fingers and toes and hope my wish comes true.
Well done Suanne Laqueur!!
P.S. I really need this book to be made into a movie. It felt so cinematic and epic to me. It would be beautiful on the big screen.
