The Fifteenth Minute by Sarina Bowen ~ Reviews by Stephanie and Amy

SUMMARY:

Just because she's famous doesn't mean she's happy.
Freshman Lianne Challice is known to millions of fans as Princess Vindi. But sometimes a silver screen sorceress just wants to hang up her wand, tell her manager to shove it, and become a normal college student. Too bad that’s harder than it looks.
She’s never lived a normal life. She hasn’t been to school since kindergarten. And getting close to anyone is just too risky — the last boy she kissed sold the story to a British tabloid.
But she can’t resist trying to get close to Daniel "DJ" Trevi, the hot, broody guy who spins tunes for hockey games in the arena. Something's haunting his dark eyes, and she needs to know more.
DJ's genius is for expressing the mood of the crowd with a ten second song snippet. With just a click and a fade, he can spread hope, pathos or elation among six thousand screaming fans.
Too bad his college career is about to experience the same quick fade-out as one of his songs. He can't get close to Lianne, and he can't tell her why. And the fact that she seems to like him at all? Incredible.

Excerpt:

Lianne Challice is chatting me up.
As I fetch the pizza I ordered from the window, I try to decide whether or not I’m going insane. Maybe all the stress in my life has finally cracked me.
But no. When I deposit the pie on a table, her big eyes cut from the jukebox over to me, before darting away again. She is so freaking cute and so feminine that it’s making me crazy. Her mouth is like a little red candy that I’m dying to taste. And who has teeth that straight? She intimidates the fuck out of me, to be honest.
I make another trip to the pizza counter for paper plates and napkins. Usually we just grab slices off the tray like animals. But tonight I’m trying to be classy. The idea makes me snicker to myself. As if. Impressing Lianne Challice isn’t something I’m capable of. But I’m having fun trying. And there hasn’t been a whole lot of fun in this year for me. So that’s something.
Years from now I’ll look back on this night and laugh. Guys, did I ever tell you about the time I chatted up a movie star? I mean, my father is still telling people about the time he sat one table over from Tina Fey at Nobu.
Lianne sneaks another glance in my direction and I beckon to her. “Have a slice?” If she wants one, now is the time. In a minute my brother and his teammates will fall on the pizza like seagulls.
“Thank you. I guess I should. I didn’t make it to the dining hall tonight.”
“Your enthusiasm for Capri’s pizza overwhelms me,” I tease. “Aren’t you a fan?”
She slides a slice onto a paper plate, considering the question. “Pizza is like a nineties hit. Pretty good, especially if that’s all there is and you’re hungry.”
My own slice stops halfway to my mouth and I laugh. “Seriously?”
“What?”
“I don’t know if we can be friends,” I say before taking a bite.
“Because I don’t love pizza?
I shake my head. “Who doesn’t love pizza? It’s, like, a basic human desire.” I cram a bite into my mouth to prove my point. Smooth, right?
She bites her bottom lip, and I realize I’d rather have that for dinner. “It’s okay. But it’s mostly just something you eat when you’re in a hurry or need to feed a crowd on the cheap.”
“Ah, I see,” I say when I can speak again. “The problem is that you haven’t had any great pizza. You’re a freshman, right? You don’t know all the glory that is Harkness pizza. Have you been to Gino’s Apizza?”
Lianne shakes her head. “I don’t think so.”
“She doesn’t think so,” I scoff. “Baby, if you’d had great pizza, you’d remember.” And now I sound like a real perv, but Lianne Challice is smiling at me, watching me with her big doe eyes, and I feel it like a drug. “They make everything from scratch. Even the sausage. We’ll go together, so I can prove my point.”
Annnd I think I just asked a movie star out on a date. Here comes the crash and burn.
First her eyes widen just a smidge. Then two pink spots appear on her face, one on either cheekbone. “Well, it would be a shame to live in this town and never know its true pizza greatness.”
I replay that sentence in my head and realize that she didn’t turn me down. “True,” I agree. “Do you think Thursday would be a night to experience pizza Nirvana?” I’m overselling thehell out of Gino’s now, but it’s working for me.
She gives me a serious frown, and I’m hoping she’s not busy on Thursday. Because I have back-to-back hockey games to DJ on Friday and Saturday. “Thursday it is. I shall prepare to be amazed.”

Reviews

I think this book was a delight to read. It is also my first full on Sarina Bowen and I can totally see why she hooked up with Elle Kennedy for HIM. I think both their writing is fluid and has that uplifting kind of silly feel to it, and mainly revolves around college aged adults ((nothing wrong with that))

Lianne is such a loveable character. I fell in love with her in the first paragraph. I was SO excited she was a gamer nerd, though i personally would have liked to have seen more if that LOL She is silly and spirited and had a good heart. Really a pleasure to read, and I felt bad when certain people were mocking her and the fact that she felt she couldnt fit in anywhere. Her mother seems horrid and shejust seemed to be drifting, with no real roots to ground her.

DJ was awesome, most of the time. Though, he didn't make me made, because I felt for his issues. The things he was being accused of were horrible and I think he stayed pretty strong throughout most of it. He tried pushing Lianne away, only to not cause her any hurt from his issues, but like she said "this isn't a John Greene Novel" and he thankfully pulled his head out of his keester.

I think what DJ did for her at the end was the sweetest thing ever. He gave her some family roots, and many doors are going to open for her. Things don't have to be miserable, trying to hold on to something toxic to try and remember her father.

This book has a good balance of humor, drama, and not too over-the-top sappy, and well, DJ is quite sexay! ;)
Oh yeah, hockey players to boot..and DJ is well, a DJ...so the music references are fun.

4 Shakesperian-propostions.

This was a sweet story to me. Lianne and DJ seem like a perfect match. Lianne is trying to find her path, outside of her acting career and has had a hard time making friends on campus. DJ is battling a misconduct allegation, and he's feeling somewhat down-trodden, trying to figure out how it happened.

I'm glad that they found what they needed in each other. Most of the drama comes from the issues mentioned above, but I enjoyed that it didn't play too much into their relationship. I'll definitely go back and read the previous books in the series.

BLOG TOUR ~ Brotherhood of Misfits Book One: Roc by Khai Bayne

]
Title: Brotherhood of Misfits, Book One: ROC
Author: Khai L. Bayne
Genre: Romantic Suspense, Mystery
Tour Host: DRC Promotions

Synopsis:

What would you do with a second chance at life?
Would you go back to the same things that you were doing before, or would you embrace that chance and take a new path?
Being the byproduct of a single parent home growing up, I learned quickly that life wasn’t easy and it damn sure wasn’t fair. I was faced with a choice back then; continue to stand back and watch my mother struggle with working three jobs to pay bills, put food in our stomachs, and clothes on our backs or do something about it. I chose to do something about it and for three years everything was going well, until the day that my life changed forever.
When I met Jethro-Elijah ‘Eli’ Shepard, he told me that just because I wasn’t given a choice in how my life was dealt to me, didn’t mean that I’m not given a chance. He showed me that no matter what people say about you and what life throws your way, that you always have the option to either accept it or defy the odds to become something greater.
My name is Archibald ‘Roc’ Rochester and when I was seventeen, I was given my second chance. How did it turn out? Well, you’ll just have to read my story to find out.
********This book is intended for mature audiences. It is a Fucked Up Ever After so the road to the end is not all pretty shit and unicorn farts. It contains scenes of domestic abuse and violence. If these types of scenes are a trigger or sensitive subject to anyone, please do NOT purchase. This book also contains sexual situations that are not suitable for anyone under age.********

4 reasons to read this book
1- Sev
2- Lonny
3- Jinx
4- Sev

While the main focus was RoC and Kenika, those 3 stole the show for me.. of course m/f/m would, wouldn't it? HaHa!

Of course nothing really happens between them....yet.. and I think the next book is going to be awesome. Sev is such a badass (p.s.. what is she? Asian or Jamaican?? I'm so confused!!) Lonny aka Eidolon, was a complete surprise and Jinx is my nerdy nerd. <3

Back to Roc and Kenika. I'll be honest, I haven't read much interracial books, but I gotta say, these two are awesome together.
Some of the slang was a bit hard to read (Jamaican included) but it added to the personalities of the characters. No two characters were alike either, which I loved. Well, Tobias not so much, maybe he'll grow on me. I really want to know more about Paul (I love me a ginger) and of course, the 3 I named above.

The story went into different POV's, some Roc, some Kenika, and even a few from the side characters. Which was fine, except sometimes you didn't know it switched to another character, so you had to guess who it was, which could be done after a sentence or two, but a title would have helped.

I thought the story definitely had the mystery/suspense thing going on. The things that Kenika has gone through, is heartbreaking, and for her past to come and haunt her like that, had me on the edge of my seat. She's lucky to have had Roc, he was exactly that, a rock...and of course Sev. Seriously, when's her book coming out!?!?

All in all, I give the story a 3.5, because the anticipation for the next book has become very high.

***Given as an ARC for my honest review***

Falling in love with a dangerous criminal can have life-altering consequences, though. And when the past and the present meet head-on, Hank finds himself in more trouble than he ever bargained for. About The Author:

Born and raised in New Orleans, Annie has a habit of shortening her words and telling long stories. She speaks with a southern flair and cooks with it too. At the tender age of twenty- one, she hitched up her wagons (took her first plane ride) and moved out west to the big shake (California). Her writing career began one sleepless night when she imagined a gorgeous woman and a man with maniacal hair floating above her like lightening bugs falling from the sky. Curious about them, their story, and why they were floating around in her head, she sat down and penned (typed) her first novel, Marigny Street. A dream come true for her, she hasn't stopped writing since. She loves a damn good love story, always has, no matter what the genre. She is particularly moved by imperfect love that in its own unique way is perfect, the notion of love at first sight, soul mates, and things that are generally out of the norm.
When she's not writing she enjoys dabbling in photography and finding new, inspirational music to add to her collection. She currently (still) resides in the big shake (although her southern roots are calling her home) with her husband, daughter, and their two peculiar dogs, Boudreaux and Tabasco (who, call her crazy, bark with an accent).

NOW AVAILABLE
**Each book in the series can be read as a standalone**

fighting shadows cover.png

Blurb
I come from a family of fighters. I always thought I’d follow in their shadows, becoming unstoppable in the ring. That changed the day I saved the life of a woman I loved, but could never have.
My brother hailed me as a hero, and my reward was a wheelchair.
Paralyzed, my life became an inescapable nightmare.
Until I met her.
Ash Mabie had a heart-stopping smile and a laugh that numbed the rage and resentment brewing inside of me. She showed me that even the darkest night still had stars, and it didn’t matter one bit that you had to lie in the weeds to see them.
I was a jaded asshole who fell for a girl with a knack for running away. I couldn’t even walk but I would have spent a lifetime chasing her.
Now, I’m on the ropes during the toughest battles of my life.
Fighting the shadows of our past.
Fighting to reclaim my future.
Fighting for her.

Flint and Ash Excerpt
“Hey, Flint? What time is it?” Quarry asked.
Ash’s smile actually slipped completely. For the briefest of seconds, she appeared almost ashamed.
I dragged my eyes away from her in order to answer his question, but as I looked at my wrist, I had no answer at all.
“Here,” she said as she pulled my watch from her pocket.
What. The. Fuck?
Quarry howled with laughter, and Ash chewed on her bottom lip.
“Explain,” I demanded, wrapping my watch back around my wrist and shoving my wallet in the front pocket of my hoodie.
Quarry filled in the blank. “She’s a pickpocket, dude. You should have seen her when she fell on your lap. It was so fucking fast. She straight-up stole that shit from you, and you had no fucking clue.”
“I didn’t steal it! I was gonna give it back,” she amended uncomfortably. “It was just a joke.”
A joke.
A. Fucking. Joke.
And just like that, I remembered why I didn’t laugh anymore.
“Was it funny? Stealing from the cripple? You get a good laugh out of that?” I snapped, spinning and rolling myself away. “You know, maybe my judgment of you wasn’t all that off to begin with. Like father, like daughter, I guess.” It was a low blow, but I felt completely betrayed by a woman I didn’t even know.
“Flint, wait. I wasn’t picking on the cripple!”
I fully realized that I had just used the term, but it enraged me that she’d had the audacity to repeat it back to me. Who the hell was this chick? I pushed a hand into my pocket, searching for my keys. Fuck the food. I’d leave her ass there. Hell, Quarry too if he didn’t get his ass to the car.
“Get in the car, Q!” I yelled, only to close my eyes and drop my chin to my chest when my hand never made contact on the keys. “Son of a bitch,” I said as I spun back around.
Quarry was laughing next to her, but Ash’s cheeks were bright red.
“Keys.” I snapped my fingers and opened my hand, palm up.
“Stop being a dick,” Quarry said, casually tossing an arm around Ash’s shoulders.
She didn’t budge as she held my glare.
“Keys,” I repeated, but she remained still.
“It was a joke.” Her chin began to quiver.
For fuck’s sake, I wasn’t in any kind of mood to deal with bullshit from some girl I didn’t even know and was quickly discovering I didn’t care to know, either.
Quarry’s eyes grew wide as she turned to him and buried her cries in his chest.
What the fuck, asshole! Q signed before rubbing his hands over her back.
Her shoulders shook as she let out a loud sob that shocked us both.
“Come on. Let’s sit down.” Q tried to guide her over to an empty table.
Ash refused to look up and tripped over one of the chairs.
“Shit,” Q said, catching her around the waist.
I was just about to roll my eyes when she glanced my way. He was still trying to get her back on her feet and over to a table when her tear-free, bright-blue eyes pointedly glanced in my direction. My head snapped back in surprise, but a smile grew on her face.
Ash was about to put on a show, and with that one look, she had invited me to have a front-row seat.
As she floundered all over Quarry, her hands slid between his pockets and her own. Every noise she made and each time she flailed covered up a jarring movement. She was keeping his mind too busy for it to process all the places she was touching him. Hell, I was only watching her and I could barely keep up.
There was no denying that it was entertaining, but I wasn’t willing to show her that. However, as she accidentally lifted her knee, catching Q in the balls, a laugh erupted from my throat. He cupped his crotch while she apologized profusely and pushed him toward the same chair he’d been dragging her to only seconds before. Just before he sat, Ash swung her arm out, unwinding Q’s belt from around his body before tossing it at me.
“Oh God. I’m so sorry!” she said as Quarry held a finger up to ask for a second to recover. She didn’t wait at all though. Instead, she walked over in my direction; her prideful smile grew with every step.
She pulled my keys out of her pocket and dropped them into my lap. They were quickly followed by Quarry’s phone, wallet, and house keys. Then she snagged his belt off the floor and tossed it over her shoulder.
“It had absolutely nothing to do with you being in a wheelchair. It was a joke and it wasn’t supposed to piss you off.”
“Hey!” Quarry yelled. “That was messed up. You did not have to knee me in the balls to prove a point to him.”
“Oh, that wasn’t to prove a point. That was for bullshitting me. You knew good and damn well that he wouldn’t find it funny,” she said without ever tearing her gaze from mine. “Look, I’m sorry. I don’t have a lot of friends. And I’ve mentally noted that pickpocketing might not be the best way to make new ones.” She shrugged. “Consider it a lesson learned.”
“Three burgers all the way, onion rings, and a shake?” the guy at the counter called out.
Ash arched an eyebrow. “You want it to go, or are we good?”
I didn’t have to drop my attitude. Sure, she’d apologized, but while I might have had a short fuse, I also had a hell of a long burn. However, as she stood in front of me with her arms crossed over her chest and her blue eyes pleading for forgiveness, it magically fell away.
I swallowed hard. “No. We’re good.”
“You sure?” She leaned in, eyeing me warily, but her smile began to grow.
I swear to God it pulled at my lips as well. I fought it. But the harder I tried to keep it restrained, the bigger Ash’s grew. She was stealing my smile. The chick was good! Finally, with an eye roll, I let out a quiet chuckle, which seemed to appease her.
“Good. Now, help your brother get redressed and I’ll make the fancy sauce.” She waggled her eyebrows.

REVIEWS

I think Aly likes to torture her readers, and The Page boys.

I've never met a group that has gone through so much hell, just to get through to the other side, just to dive back in to the next hell.

We know all the drama Til went through, and then in the end of that book, Flint gets shot and paralyzed. On top of that, he thinks he's in love with his sister in law. For a good portion of the beginning of this book, we get to deal with an arsehole. I did feel his pain and he did make me tear up a few times, I did want to punch him several times though lol

Thank the gods that Ash is an awesome character. In her own rights she could be just as cranky as Flint, but she's not. We get a socially awkward, head strong, girl who has no fear. It was fun to see her break Flint out of his funk. It wasn't fun seeing her heart break though, and another "I wanna punch Flint moment". At least it got his head out of his arse!!!
I think without that catalyst, he wouldn't have gone the lengths that he did to become who he was meant to be, and in return, it helped Ash be who she was meant to be.

That ending... while great for Flint and Ash, devastating for Quarry. I'm curious to see how she will "fix" Q.

Until this winter..

I give this book ****

Shanda's Review

Well Aly always makes me gasp, and cry with every book she puts out. I don’t know what to say except I loved Fighting Shadows. The only slight complaint from me would be FLINT!!! GAH I wanted to punch him several times. I understood his anger and frustration over his walking but the Eliza thing made him really selfish. I went back and forth a lot with him, punch, hug, punch, hug. LOL!

I absolutely adored Ash! She was funny, quick witted, sassy, and knew herself really well. I think she had a great sense of self but Flint made her question that and it made me sad. I think she should have made Flint grovel a bit more but they were pretty great together.

I will say OMG to the ending. Dear God why does Aly do this to me with her books? I need QUARRY’S BOOK NOW!!

I won’t add much more but if you are a fan of Aly’s books and a fan of Fighting Silence you will love this book. If you are new to her books get started NOW!!

One final note I love Slate! I enjoyed his story Among the Echoes but he really shines in the On the Ropes series.

4.5*
At the end of Fighting Silence, we know that Flint has been partially paralyzed by the bullet to his back. I have to say, through out the good portion of the first part of this book, I wanted to punch Flint for his behavior. I can completely understand his bitterness at the situation, but his anger is severely misdirected.

Ash.....I absolutely FLOVE her!!! She stood up to Flint and called him out when he was being a complete asshole. Ash helped Flint to see his life and his actions in a new way...and started him towards his healing, even if he didn't realize it was what she was doing at the time. Even though she has a somewhat questionable past, she always believed that she was more than what people saw of her and she pushed past all those boundaries that people wanted to set for her due to that past.

We get short glimpses of Till and Eliza; Till is still the over-protective, over-bearing big brother, but he truly wants only what is best for his brother and Eliza is still a firecracker that keeps him on his toes.

For the second portion of the book, I'm so glad that Flint didn't give up on any of his dreams. Ash was afraid of trying out a relationship with Flint again, scared that he might leave her. I was so glad when she finally decided that she was willing to fight for what she wanted most, and that was a future with Flint.

I must say that Aly is an evil genius, as the last chapter (pre-epilogue) has already got me jonesing for Quarry's story.....and that part just made me sob big, fat tears for him.
