I have read one other book by Ms. Halle, her Donners of the Dead, and
loved it. This one? Ye gods, THIS ONE was bloody brilliant!
When I saw that,
1. The muse for the hero was Tom Hardy
2. The hero was a Rugby player
3. He was a hot Scot,
OF COURSE that I had to read it! It took me a little more than usual to finish it because real life kept interfering and I couldn't read more. But it was always on my mind, I was eager to get back to it because oh, the many feels!
I immediately liked the heroine, Kayla. She's wild and free, the only single gal from her group of friends. She doesn't plan on falling in love, settling down or - God forbid - get married and start a family. Nope. She's happy with her life. So what if she constantly wants to quit her job because it's not her dream job and she's not passionate about it? It pays the rent, puts food on her table and allows her to live comfortably.
"First the men in this city disappoint me, then my vibrator does."
"If you can't find a man to share your heart with, well... share your vagina with him instead."
But everything changes the moment she meets Lachlan. They don't exactly hit it off, what with Lachlan being the broody, silent type - I love this type of hero like you wouldn't believe! But Kayla being Kayla, manages to get under his skin, little by little, until they become somewhat friends and then lovers.
"I'm a smitten fucking kitten."
Of course that all good things must come to an end, because Lachlan has a life, a career back in Scotland, while Kayla has her own in San Francisco. This couldn't possibly go on. Or could it?
"It means... well, what can happen between now and then?"
"I can fuck your brains out," he says gruffly. "That's what can happen."
This book has a lot of funny moments, then we have the hot ones - Lachlan, yer perfect - and then we have the heartbreaking scenes, the ones that gut you. There are several, so buckle up. I think what I love most about this book is the real portrayal of a relationship between two people so different, you doubt they could possibly make it work. The ups and downs, highs and lows. It's not as easy as "Oh, the sex is great, I may be falling for you, so I'm coming to Scotland and boom, we live happily-ever-after, no complications." Nope.
The things both of them went through, especially Lachlan... Makes me tear up. At around 80-something % I was, "Oh, no", at 90-something % I was, "No, no, no" but toward the end, I was melting. So, no worries. The epilogue... It makes me want to go to Scotland and hunt down a hot Scot like Lachlan.
Now, I wonder how much this book hangover will last.
