I have a habit of starting a series not with the first book. But I honestly don't know why it took me several months after reading the second, to read this.

New Orleans. A tattooed girl. A councilman. You'd think it wouldn't work. Oh boy, but DOES it work!

The title suggests mystery and secrets, to me. Someone's hiding from something or simply hiding some things. So, of course that it got me curious to know who, what, where and how.

Let's just say, Simon's different from Con - side character here, main hero in Beneath This Ink - because he's less intense, less alpha, but holy mother, when he starts getting all growly and possessive! I'd love to play a Simon-says game with him, heh heh.

Speaking of Con, I was crazy-happy to read more about him, in this one.

But the story really is about putting your foot down and, no matter the circumstances, live on your own terms. Just be yourself. where you can and how you can.

This may sound like a vague review - it is - but you'll just have to read the book to find out what I'm talking about. It flows perfectly; you can't help but get all the feels.

I really like Charlie and Simon together. So stinkin' cute, these two!

4.5 stars and this series has become one of my faves and I just can't wait for book 3!

Review

Not *exactly* a review, more like updates on how I felt after reading the book.

Ugh. UGH!

I can't even...

I loved it but I was also disappointed, you can say. No rating until I make up my mind about it.

***Update***

I can't stop thinking about Corrado Moretti.

4 stars.

Okay, 4 1/2. That's my final offer.

"You deserve to be somebody's everything, not somebody's secret."

There you go. How can you NOT love that man? Despite his nasty childhood - someone should have kicked his mom and sister's ass - and being 'groomed' to join La Cosa Nostra. He found his light in the dark.

***Second update***

Several months later, I'm gazing longingly at my Made paperback copy. 5 stars, people. That's what that means.

Blurb

Cooper Ryan is living the dream. Between the parties with rock royalty, booze, groupies and performing to crowds of thousands with his band Taint, life seems pretty sweet. There’s just one thing missing: the feisty little red-head that took his baby and ran off with his heart. Throwing himself into music is the only thing keeping him sane.

Until a run-in with a nonplussed, package-wielding PA throws everything off balance.

Ali Jones is having a craptastic life. Her grandmother died, leaving her homeless, penniless, and alone, and her boyfriend left her for a tramp who takes her clothes off for money. That’s why when she lands her dream job at a record company it seems like it’s too good to be true.

Because it is.

Slapped with an ultimatum, Ali must decide if facing the horror of the unemployment line is a fate worse than going on the road with four rowdy rockers hell-bent on making her life misery.

He’s adored by millions.

Excerpt

My vision is partly obstructed by Ali, but the sight of her head bobbing as she takes him in her mouth is all I need to know what’s going on. Levi meets my gaze across the limo. There’s gloating there—that much is obvious—but there’s also understanding. When you spend as much time together as we do, you come to know your bandmates pretty well. For all his talk, he’s not as big of a douche as he claims to be. He may not ever sleep with the same woman more than once—with the exception of Ali, I guess—but I know he’s not immune to the loneliness our lifestyle creates. It’s strange how you can be adored by millions and yet completely alone all at the same time.
He slides his hand into her hair and closes his eyes, throwing his head back against the seat.
“Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck,” he whispers, and then he gathers her hair to the side and shifts her body so that my view is completely unobstructed. I watch as she works her hands up his shaft in time with her mouth. He doesn’t attempt to fuck the back of her throat and make her choke on it, the way we both had that first night we fucked her. Instead, his touch is gentle. Reverent.
It makes me crazy, and hot as fucking hell. I shift uncomfortably, adjusting my cock within my jeans. I don’t make a move towards them, though I want to. I want to bury myself inside her and mark her as mine, but at this point the lines are so fucking blurred it doesn’t matter whom she belongs to. Him. Me. The both of us, or neither one.
I lean forward, taking a glass from the shelf and a crystal decanter filled with amber liquor, and I pour myself a drink, and then I slide back into the leather to watch.
“Play with yourself, Red,” he whispers.
“No.”
“Do it,” I say, and she turns around to glare at me. I can’t tell if she’s disappointed I’m not joining in, or if she forgot I was even here.
“I don’t want—”
“Why are you suddenly so embarrassed?” I say sharply, swigging back more of the scotch than I should.
“I’m not embarrassed. I’d actually rather that you joined in.”
“I’m watching,” I say, eyeing her coolly over my glass. She scowls at me a moment and then she kneels up, steadying herself with one hand on Levi’s thigh. She wriggles her skirt up over her hips and bends over. Everything is on display as she takes him in her mouth again. I close my eyes, not wanting to watch her on her knees in front of him, her head bent low, her full fuck-me lips wrapped around Levi’s cock. I feel as if I’m on a ride that’s spinning out of control and I can’t find a way off. I can’t make it stop. And I so badly want it to stop.

It's always good to be back in Sector 4. We get Jared and Lili's story this time around. Lili's finally having to feel things, no longer able to conceal her emotions with drugs. Jared is now working for Dallas, albeit covertly. Lili is having a hard time adjusting to the O'Kane lifestyle, as she was always taught that women didn't enjoy sex and that men used it to control women. Jared tries to open Lili's eyes to the fact that O'Kane women aren't oppressed and that the women are really in control, especially during sexual encounters.

Rachel befriends Lili and also helps to show her that the relationships in Sector 4, especially Rachel's with Cruz and Ace, are very much normal and enjoyable. There is one particular chapter that is especially hot with Rachel, Lili, Jared, Ace and Cruz.

There is some danger, as Jared works covertly to try and gain information for Dallas. Lili wants to help Jared with his work, but he won't allow it, which also causes some strife in their relationship. Lili shows Jared that she can handle it, but he still needs some time to work through his issues of being protective, but also allowing her to flourish.

Overall, the book was good; but it just didn't pull me in as much as the previous books did, which is why it was rated 4-Stars.

**ARC received for my honest review**

It's good to be back in Sector 4.

This time, the whore and the Ice Princess get their HEA.

Lili has had it rough, all throughout her life. She relied on drugs to keep her going. Until she escaped, got taken into Sector 4 by Dallas, and realized she doesn't need them anymore. Of course, her dulled senses came roaring back to life. We all know the O'Kanes are all about making one another feel good.

I've always liked Jared. There was no change in this book, though he was a tad bit stubborn about keeping Lili in the dark about things, to protect her. Men. But I liked how she made him realize she's stronger than she was when she first arrived to Sector 4 and doesn't need any coddling.

Now, the sex scenes were, well, hot, as always. I mean really, there's no orgy like an O'Kane orgy and I love how we get glimpses of Ace, Rachel and Cruz and how much they still love each other. Sigh.

However... something was missing and I can't figure it out what. Of course, this is all on me, how it made me feel.

4 stars. I don't know whether to look forward to the next one, even though it's finally gonna be all about my baby, Mr. Adrian 'Maddox' Rios and his... lovers. I honestly would have wished for him to end up with only Scarlet because you can really feel something whenever they're in the same scene together. Or when you read their POVs. But I guess we'll see.

“So how long have you been spying for Dallas?”

Cruz’s casual words startled Jared enough to throw him off balance. He almost missed blocking the man’s next blow, and wood scraped over wood as their staffs collided.

Jared spun around and tried to recover his composure. As tactics went, this one was murderously lethal—throw out something shocking, as boldly as possible, then take advantage of your opponent’s distraction to strike your killing blow.

“You’re a good soldier,” he murmured, tightening his fingers around his weapon. The staff was solid red oak—deadly and perfectly balanced. “I bet you’re an even better interrogator.”

“Not really.” Cruz planted his staff on the floor and met Jared’s gaze squarely. “My psych evaluations were consistently disappointing. I’ve always been burdened with an overabundance of empathy. The Base has plenty of soldiers not operating with that particular handicap.”

“I’ll keep that in mind.” Wiping his face with his arm did fuck-all to clear Jared’s vision, because every inch of his bare skin was dripping with sweat. He could make it through a solid hour of forms, no problem, but sparring with Cruz was a far more intense workout. “What gave me away?”

“Nothing obvious.” Cruz shrugged one big shoulder. “I doubt anyone else will notice. But I know a lot of people inside Eden, so I hear the gossip. And I watch you.”

“Good to know.” He made a rush, swinging one end of his staff up toward Cruz’s unprotected side. Cruz pivoted smoothly, his block effortless, his movements lazy as he flipped into a counterattack that pushed Jared back.

His next words were just as casual, just as easy. “I haven’t talked to Dallas about it. I figured if he wanted me to know, he’d have told me. Unless something was stopping him.”

“Not letting it go? Fine.” Jared tossed his staff aside with a sigh, and it clattered to the floor. “Ace can’t find out. That needs to be a promise.”

Cruz hesitated only a moment before nodding. “The fewer who know, the safer you are. But I need to know. If something goes wrong, I’m the one most likely to be able to get you out.”

“Bren’s on it.”

“Bren doesn’t have my connections.”

“Really, now?” So, quiet Cruz was the one with the friends in high places. “I’m impressed.”

“I can’t use them for information, not the kind Dallas needs. But if you get in trouble…” Cruz’s expression stayed serious. “Don’t underestimate how far I’ll go to protect Ace’s heart.”

Not just a promise, but a warning. “You took the words right out of my mouth. Which is why you need to stay the fuck out of it.”

“I’m not going to trip you up at fancy parties—or your new club. But you need to check in with us regularly.” Cruz swept up Jared’s abandoned staff and tossed it to him. “And I need to make sure you can kill a man with whatever’s handy.”

“Your newest project, huh?”

“I don’t want to get too soft living in all that O’Kane luxury.”

It wasn’t the high living on Dallas’s compound that was bringing out all of Cruz’s latent protective instincts—and that was exactly what this was, no matter how he tried to spin it. No, it was all that time he’d spent curled up between Ace and Rachel.

Caring. Once you let go and let yourself do it, it got to be a habit.

Jared kept his mouth shut for a few minutes, focusing instead on the careful coordination of his breathing and his muscles and the weapon in his hands, all moving in concert. But the words spilled forth anyway.

“It’s not so different,” he panted. “In my bedroom, or in a bar. Half the time, all I do is wait for them to say things they already want to say.” That much he understood now—the compulsion born of secrecy, how silence was its own sort of prison. The relief that came with being able to tell someone, anyone, all those things you were supposed to keep locked up.

“People want to be heard.” Cruz wasn’t as breathless, but he wasn’t moving so smoothly now, either. He blocked Jared’s advance only inches from his ribs and broke away to regain space to maneuver. “The bar’s a good idea. Eden’s elite are getting bored and reckless.”

Bored was one of Jared’s longstanding clients tripling her number of monthly visits. Reckless was the time she brought two friends with her, both the wives of powerful, devout men. Of true believers.

Bored and reckless. Separately, they made people dangerous. But together? Bored and reckless had toppled empires.
