Title: Mercy
Author: Debra Anastasia
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: August 21, 2017

He taught me to kill. Murder is in my blood now. It runs through my veins and though I hide the monster I see in the mirror with ink, it doesn’t keep him from coming out.

My street name is Mercy, but I never show any. Except for her. I watch Becca, though she doesn’t know. She saved me a long time ago; the day my father killed my mother. Her bravery turned her into a target.

My father holds a grudge and knife with the same proficiency, and Becca is the focus of his hatred. And I’m the only monster who can save her.

Nix is a man that life has not been kind to. His father is a monster and as a result Nix grew up living in fear. Fenix and Becca meet on the night of his mother’s death. She is witness to his father terrorizing him and the fearless Becca stands up to the mean man. Nix is in awe of Becca and he sees her as his hero. Nix puts Becca on a pedestal and his father puts her on his hit list.

Now it is several years later and Nix goes by the street name Mercy. Becca doesn’t realize it but Nix has been watching her all these years to protect her. He has three people “his girls” that he cares deeply for and watches over. His little sister, the little girl he has rescued, and Becca. Nix has become obsessed with Becca and has fallen in love with her. He only wants her to be happy but he does manipulate her life a bit. He is extremely protective and even stalkerish but it comes from his deep need to protect because he couldn’t save his mother. He never thought he would get the chance to be with Becca but fate steps in and they come face to face. Becca starts to fall fast for Nix but the closer he gets, the higher the stakes when his father is on the loose seeking revenge.

I really liked so much of this story. Nix’s skeleton tattoos were really cool but they were also sad. It was heartbreaking that he went to that extreme because of his father. Nix had a beautiful heart and deserved to be loved. If you are a fan of stories where the hero has a gentle heart you will love Nix. Becca’s natural instinct for broken things draws her to Nix. I really loved her gesture to Nix towards the end of the story. It was really special and made Nix feel even more loved and at peace.

This story could have been great for me but it did drag in some parts. I also did not care for the crass humor between Becca and her bestie. I am all for this in some books but with the serious nature of the overall book it kept throwing me out of the story. It felt really odd.

Author Bio

Debra Anastasia likes to write from her heart, her soul or her butt. The genres she dabbles in are examples of that. There are two paranormal romances in the Seraphim Series and now four contemporary romances in the Poughkeepsie Brotherhood Series and a stand alone in the same genre, Mercy. Fire Down Below and Fire in the Hole, Booty Camp Dating Service and Beast complete her comedy repertoire. The Revenger, a dark paranormal romance, is finally in the light, and the last, a novella called Late Night with Andres, is special because 100% of the proceeds go to breast cancer research.

Debra lives in Maryland with her two kids, husband of twenty years and two dogs. The king of the house is clearly the tuxedo cat that is the size of a small donkey. Find about her latest adventures on

The rules of the game don’t apply off the field in this first Barons novel.

New York Barons tight end Gavin Brawley is suspended from the team and on house arrest after a video of him brawling goes viral. Gavin already has a reputation as a jerk with a temper on and off the field—which doesn’t help him once he finds himself on the wrong side of the law. And while he’s been successful professionally, he’s never been lucky when it comes to love.

Noah Monroe is a recent college grad looking for a job—any job—to pay off his mounting student debt. Working as Gavin’s personal assistant/babysitter seems like easy money. But Noah isn’t prepared for the electrifying tension between him and the football player. He’s not sure if he’d rather argue with Gavin or tackle him to the floor. But both men know the score, and neither is sure what will happen once Gavin's timeout is over…

Wow. I didn't want to put this book down once I started. I'm not even totally sure I can pinpoint why. Maybe it was the lion of a man with an attitude to match, or a Clark Kent style book nerd with a lot of fire and spunk.

Their chemistry flew off the pages from the very beginning. It wasn't a lusty thing at first, at least not on the surface. It was more loathing and judging a book by its cover- from both ends.

I adored Noah. He took ZERO shit from this guy who was twice his size and held his own. I thought it was admirable and kind of adorable and also a little surprising. Apparently Gavin thought so too. Their banter was great, especially once Gavin loosened up a bit.

Yes, this series is about football and a football team, but it's not fully what the story is about, because Gavin can't even play this year. This was a lot about Gavin growing into his own and being the guy he wants to be, not the anger fueled monster everyone tries to make him out to be. He's fiercely loyal to his team, and eventually to Noah.
In turn, his teammates, and Noah, are fiercely loyal to him That's how you know things are going to be all right.

Let's talk about Gavin's PR guy, Joe Carmichael. Good guy or bad guy? I can't really tell if I like him. He has Gavin's best interests at heart, but he seems like such a sleaze, I can't help but be angry at him throughout the whole book. I still feel a little unclear about him even at the end.

Either way, I thought it was a great story of healing and growing and also pushing passed stereotypes.

The more he gets to know her, the more he realizes that something isn’t right. He may not be able put his finger on what it is, but he’s determined to find out what’s going on with the girl with the haunted eyes. Tate didn’t anticipate that someone else would be just as determined to keep Hennessy’s nightmare a secret, and he never realizes just how far that person is willing go to keep those skeletons in the closet until it’s too late. With the very real threat of jail time hanging over his head, Tate leaves without a backwards glance at the town or the girl. The problem is that out-of-sight doesn’t necessarily mean out of mind, and it’s Tate who’s now haunted by his decision and memories of Hennessy. *** Hennessy Hanes knows better than anyone that not everything is always as it appears to be. After years of being on the receiving end of her squeaky-clean preacher father’s abuse, she seizes an opportunity to leave it all behind and runs. Her only regret is that in walking away she loses any chance with the one person who tried to save her. *** Fast forward ten years, and they’re both back where they started. Tate was never a good boy, and it turns out that the man he’s now grown into isn’t all that much better. Anger is a living, breathing part of him, and there’s a court order forcing him to seek help from the one person he’s never forgotten. Hennessy never thought she’d see Tate Casey again, and certainly not on her couch. But now it’s her turn to save him, and there are rules she must follow as his psychologist, not to mention a court order instructing her to help him manage his anger. If she doesn’t follow those rules, he’ll end up back in jail. Tate Casey has never been a man who followed the rules, and Hennessy is no longer the straight-laced, timid preacher’s daughter she once was. His hands may be tied, so it looks like for the first time in Hennessy’s life, she’ll be the one breaking the rules for the chance to finally get what she’s always wanted. Him.
