Synopsis:
Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.
Whoever coined that phrase is a bald-faced liar. Words are often the sharpest weapon of all, triggering some of the most powerful emotions a human can experience.
“You’re pregnant.”
“It’s a boy.”
“Your son needs a heart transplant.”
Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.
Lies.
Syllables and letters may not be tangible, but they can still destroy your entire life faster than a bullet from a gun.
Two words—that was all it took to extinguish the sun from my sky.
“He’s gone.”
For ten years, the darkness consumed me.
In the end, it was four deep, gravelly words that gave me hope of another sunrise.
“Hi. I’m Porter Reese.”
4 star review
The Darkest Sunrise starts the story of Charlotte and Porter. Charlotte is a doctor that has gone through an unimaginable loss in her life. 10 years have come and gone and she can’t move forward. It is completely understandable for any parent. I wouldn’t have moved on either. Currently she drowns herself in work and doesn’t have much of a social life. She is what I would call stuck in time. No moving forward; she is just getting by day to day.
Porter is a single father to two children. His son is very ill and Porter is pursuing all avenues to get him the treatment he needs. He will not give up on his son even though most doctors can’t do much for him. Porter learns that Charlotte specializes in the treatment his son needs. He has to beg, borrow, and steal to get a meeting with her but Charlotte doesn’t treat children. When Porter meets Charlotte he ends up pursuing her and they start to fall for each other. This was one of my frustrations with the story because Porter asks Charlotte out instead of begging her to treat his child. It was kind of fast and not the act of a desperate father to save his son. But you also learn that no matter what he said Charlotte wouldn’t have treated him.
In usual Aly Martinez fashion, the story has a big twist at the end. I guessed it early on and then doubted myself so I figured I was wrong. It was a cool twist and it sets the characters up for some big heartache in book two. It is quite the cliffy but it is no biggie since The Brightest Sunset will release two weeks later.

AUTHOR INFORMATION:
Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her four young children.
Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys cheap wine, mystery leggings, and baked feta. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person.
She passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a super-sized tumbler of wine by her side.
