He taught me to kill. Murder is in my blood now. It runs
through my veins and though I hide the monster I see in the mirror with ink, it
doesn’t keep him from coming out.
My street name is Mercy, but I never show any. Except
for her. I watch Becca, though she doesn’t know. She saved
me a long time ago; the day my father killed my mother. Her bravery turned her
into a target.
My father holds a grudge and knife with the same
proficiency, and Becca is the focus of his hatred. And I’m the only monster who
can save her.

SHANDA'S 3.5 STAR REVIEW
Nix is a man that life has not been kind to. His father is a monster and as a result Nix grew up living in fear. Fenix and Becca meet on the night of his mother’s death. She is witness to his father terrorizing him and the fearless Becca stands up to the mean man. Nix is in awe of Becca and he sees her as his hero. Nix puts Becca on a pedestal and his father puts her on his hit list.
Now it is several years later and Nix goes by the street name Mercy. Becca doesn’t realize it but Nix has been watching her all these years to protect her. He has three people “his girls” that he cares deeply for and watches over. His little sister, the little girl he has rescued, and Becca. Nix has become obsessed with Becca and has fallen in love with her. He only wants her to be happy but he does manipulate her life a bit. He is extremely protective and even stalkerish but it comes from his deep need to protect because he couldn’t save his mother. He never thought he would get the chance to be with Becca but fate steps in and they come face to face. Becca starts to fall fast for Nix but the closer he gets, the higher the stakes when his father is on the loose seeking revenge.
I really liked so much of this story. Nix’s skeleton tattoos were really cool but they were also sad. It was heartbreaking that he went to that extreme because of his father. Nix had a beautiful heart and deserved to be loved. If you are a fan of stories where the hero has a gentle heart you will love Nix. Becca’s natural instinct for broken things draws her to Nix. I really loved her gesture to Nix towards the end of the story. It was really special and made Nix feel even more loved and at peace.
This story could have been great for me but it did drag in some parts. I also did not care for the crass humor between Becca and her bestie. I am all for this in some books but with the serious nature of the overall book it kept throwing me out of the story. It felt really odd.
Author Bio
Debra Anastasia likes to write from her heart, her soul or
her butt. The genres she dabbles in are examples of that. There are two
paranormal romances in the Seraphim Series and now four contemporary romances
in the Poughkeepsie Brotherhood Series and a stand alone in the same genre,
Mercy. Fire Down Below and Fire in the Hole, Booty Camp Dating Service and
Beast complete her comedy repertoire. The Revenger, a dark paranormal romance,
is finally in the light, and the last, a novella called Late Night with Andres,
is special because 100% of the proceeds go to breast cancer research.
Debra lives in Maryland with her two kids, husband of twenty
years and two dogs. The king of the house is clearly the tuxedo cat that is the
size of a small donkey. Find about her latest adventures on DebraAnastasia.com
