“Tell me about this place. This…Arcania.”
What if your life as you knew it ceased to exist?
That is the question Naeve Brannigan and her three sisters are faced with on the eve of their 25th birthday.
Continuing a tradition they’ve hidden from their mother for years, the four women arrive at a tarot shop to have their futures told.
Only this time their futures aren’t predicted—they’re forever changed.
They’ve awoken in a strange time and place with no knowledge of how they got there. All they have to go by is the word of a man who claims to be family—a family they’ve never heard of.
He tells them of a world they could never have imagined. One that has been cursed by an Empress fueled by old revenge—revenge their mother appears to be at the center of.
As they fight to survive the people and dangers of an unknown land, they slowly begin to unravel its mysteries to find that they hold the key to saving this world…this Arcania.
The question that remains for each of them is: Who do you become when the you that you always were is no longer?

Excerpt

“Don’t. Make. A. Sound.”
The low, gravelly voice reverberated through her as she felt a tear escape the corner of her eye. The arm that was banded across her chest was full-on muscle as it easily held her in place against a body that was as impenetrable as a brick wall.
Naeve didn’t move a muscle, but she lowered her eyes the best she could and saw a black leather glove that went halfway up that thick forearm. As the hand on her right shoulder tightened, she grimaced and felt the tip of the knife press against her throat.
“Where is your other sister?”
Naeve remained silent, not sure she could even remember how to speak, and then she felt those fingers grip her shoulder harder as they spun her around and pulled her up close.
The sight that greeted her was like something from her worst nightmare.
She couldn’t have imagined ever feeling the terror she felt right then. For that reason alone, she’d never known that her response would be to become one hundred percent paralyzed.
As she stared up at the towering figure before her, she had to wonder if maybe she was already dead and he’d been sent to collect her. Cloaked from head to toe in nothing but black, he almost blended into the shadows except for the shiny blade he had pointed at her throat. She couldn’t make out a face behind the hood and mask, but all she continued to hope was that, if he planned to kill her, he’d do it fast.

Brilliant. Movie worthy. I can already see the creators of Stardust producing this movie, with Patrick Stewart as the narrator.

4 sisters, quadruplets, but as different from each other as can be. Naeve with her blonde hair, Siobhan with her fiery red hair, Fiona a brunette, and Audra with her inky black hair (and the spitting image of their mother) celebrate their 25th birthday by going to get their tarots read. Unknown to them, age 25 is a special age, and upon walking in to have their fortunes read and something feeling very "off", the girls wake up in a realm unknown to them.

So many mysteries and secret surround this land, and we go in through their eyes, experiencing everything for the first time with them.

The first character we meet, seems like whimsical kind of Character, Sabastian. His kind is very rare in this land and are feared by everyone, since not much is known of their kind. He is also a character I can't wait to learn more about, I feel he is a vital key in the mystery of Arcania.

The next set of characters are estranged brothers, Ry'Ker, the Head Imperial Guard and his brother,Mala'Kai, aka Kai, the best swordsman in the land. I'm just saying this now, I'm totally claiming Kai!! hahaha

Anyways,The journey is mainly about the oldest sister Naeve and Kai. He is trying to save her from the crazy evil empress, their aunt, Seraphine. She has done something to both Naeve and Siobhan, and he wants to find away to stop the darkness that will take them over.

In the end, you're left with Ry'ker and Bastian's story, the other 3 sisters, Naeve and Ry'Ker, and Li'am/Serpaphine and some "mystery guard". Things are unfolding and the pressure is on. Who will get the keys, who will unlock the doors, and what will become of Arcania?

I love a good book that makes you think, and I think Ella did a wonderful job creating this other fantasy realm. I felt like I was pulled into it with the girls and there are so many wonderful characters to choose from!! My 3rd favorite is buttercup, read it and find out! heehee

REVIEW

Temperance (The Arcanian Chronicles, #1)

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I wasn't sure what to expect with this book, but now I've decided that this author can pull off any genre she tries. To me, the appeal to a fantasy story is the otherworldly details, mystery and hidden clues. Temperance is full of these. I just finished reading, but feel like if I reread it, I would catch so many things that I missed the first time.

This is a story involving an alternate realm. During the same time that we are living our day to day, in the land of Arcania, sensualeers, mortals, Guardians, Imperial Guards, castles, magic, swords, an Empress, a Commander, healers, etc. exist in a land where forces constantly struggle to determine the fate of everyone's existence. Nothing has occurred to change the slow decent of life for quite some time here until the four sisters arrive.
It was insanity. It was unreal.
And if this was a dream, she wasn't quite ready to wake up.

Ahh, the men of Arcania, what to tell about them?
The brothers Ry'Ker and Mala'Kai are pretty hunky, so different and so alike at the same time. Both, I believe, are honorable men. They just possess differing morals. Ry is the right hand to the Commander, and Kai follows only himself. I must say that Kai totally won me over. He can rescue me any day.
He was like everything else in this strange, new world—a beautiful nightmare. Dark, dangerous, and lethal.

Li'Am and Si'Bastian, father and son, Commander and sensualeer—these two are very interesting. We have barely scratched the surface on what's in store for them. I can see that both will most likely skirt and hop the good/evil boundaries in this series. I do have a soft spot for Bastian. He's the character that has my attention the most at this moment.

All of the people are connected—the girls, their mother, the heroes, villains and all between. I have lots of theories right now, but mentioning them would be spoiling. Temperance is a learn as you go book. You have to figure out who or what things and people are as the clues drop and the happenings unfold.
Your two eldest are the first on my list, temperance and strength—we don't want any of that.

I'm so ready for book 2. If you are looking for something different, the full fantasy experience, this is probably the story for you. Anyone that knows me knows that I love to ferret out the significance of inner messages in a fantasy storyline. Several were offered in this read. <3 The beginning was a little difficult for me to get into, but the more I think about all the little details, the more I'm liking this story. The author had to have put so much thought into it.

4.5 stars

Pepper

I stare at Sammy for entirely too long. He absentmindedly brushes a hand over his chin, an attempt to remove crumbs that aren’t there. Because why the hell else would I be staring at him like I wanted to give birth to his giant, Viking children?

“What?”

“You’re a lollipop man and you work in a nursing home?”

“Yeah.” He mutters around a mouth full of bread.

“You’re like mother fucking Teresa.”

“Don’t start. Jake gives me enough shit over this stuff.”

Jake lets out a chuckle that has me impaling him with a single look. “You haven’t even heard the best part yet.”

“There’s more? What, did he create the fucking universe?”

“Sam’s a volunteer firefighter.”

OH. MY. EXPLODING. OVARIES.

I think I just came a little.

“Was, a volunteer firefighter. Now they pay me for it. And I don’t think you can claim sainthood from an occupation.”

“Dude. See that? That glazed over look in her eyes right there? This is why you need to be telling bitches that shit when we go out to pick up. Look at her, right now she’s imagining sliding down your fireman’s pole. I’m telling ya, you gotta use that shit, man. It’s fucking gravy, baby.” He laughs again, and then says, “Or baby gravy, depending on which way you look at it.”

“Shut the fuck up.” Sammy says.

Something occurs to me just then. Sam is a fireman. Okay just for a second, put aside the fact that you’re imagining those rock hard abs all greased up and covered in soot, and ash, and splashed all over the month of January, and think about this. Sam is a fireman. Fireman S—“Holy shit!” I exclaim, so loud that every pair of eyes in the room turn to look at me “You’re fireman Sam! We used to watch that show?” I implore, and then, because I don’t feel I’ve made enough of an arse of myself I sing the theme song, finishing with a pointed, “You are the hero next door!”
Jake’s loud guffaw fills the room. “Fireman Sam. Dude that’s fucking gold!”

Falling Away - Chapter 5

“So, how did this happen?” I asked, holding the gauze on his skin, under the cuts, to catch the saline.
His abs flexed, probably from the cold fluid, since saline didn’t sting, as I poured it over the cuts, cleaning them.
He sucked in air through his teeth. “Some of the science kids have greenhouses on the roof,” he grunted, and I almost laughed out loud. “Masters asked me to go up and make sure the roofs were closed, but I slipped coming back down the stairs. Scraped myself on some bolts.”
Ouch.
I used the rest of the gauze to wipe up the solution, and then ripped open a package with a wet wipe and made sure the blood was cleared up.
“You should be using gloves,” he pointed out. “You know? Blood and all.”
“I thought any girl was safe with you,” I shot back, tearing open bandages. “Isn’t that what you told me?”
Jax was silent for a minute, narrowing his eyes farther and watching me as I placed three rectangular bandages on his stomach.
“I said any girlfriend of mine,” he finally clarified. “But you shouldn’t be so careless. Use gloves next time.”
I ignored him, feeling weird on the occasions he acted like this. Jax had a habit of scolding me, sometimes acting as though he was protecting me, and then following it all up with being an asshole. I finally figured out condescension was his way of gaining superiority. Making others feel stupid.
I sat back, looking him in the eye and changing the subject. “Is anything else hurt?”
He hesitated only a moment. And then folded his arm back, lifting his right elbow to reveal the scratches I’d noticed earlier.
Repeating the same procedure, I stood up and leaned over him, catching the saline wash as it cascaded over his wound and into the gauze.
He hissed, and I blinked.
“Blow on it,” he ordered.
“It doesn’t sting,” I scoffed, knowing damn well that saline didn’t hurt.
“K.C., Jesus,” he barked, wincing.
I rolled my eyes but gave in. Holding the underside of his arm—his hard triceps—I leaned down and released a slow, cool breeze over the scratches. Jax’s scent wafted over me again, and I desperately wanted to close my mouth so I could breathe him in through my nose.
But I didn’t. I could tell his eyes were on me.
“Why are you watching me?” I asked, wiping up the rest of the solution and blood.
I didn’t look at him, but I heard him swallow.
“This is just the first time you’ve ever made me feel good, is all,” he replied in probably the most candid way I’d ever heard him speak.
I pinched my eyebrows together.
The first time I’d ever made him feel good. I didn’t know what to say to that. Hell, I had nothing to say to that.
Keeping quiet, I finished applying his bandages as fast as I could and didn’t meet his eyes again. He’d tried to be nice to me in high school. He’d tried to be a friend. Maybe friends with benefits but still a friend. Now here I was, forcing my attention on him, and he probably had no patience for me anymore.
“Can I ask you a question?” I ventured.
“What?”
“That night you drove Liam home . . .” I swallowed, smoothing my fingers over the bandage I’d fixed to his arm. “You said you had tattoos. Too many.” I repeated his words, my eyes fixated on his forearm. “What did you mean?” I pressed, because clearly Jax didn’t sport any tattoos. His statement hadn’t made any sense.
Even though I hadn’t looked at him, I noticed his head turn away as he inhaled a slow, deep breath. Kind of as though he was getting ready to dive deep underwater and knew he wouldn’t be up for air for a while.
“Sorry,” I said quietly, straightening up and crumpling the bandage wrappers in my fist. “I just . . . I don’t know . . .” I trailed off. “I just want to understand.”
I finally met his eyes, and he studied me silently. I didn’t know if he was trying to figure out what to tell me or if he wanted to tell me anything at all. Funny thing was, I’d thought about what Jax said that night a lot over the years, and while I was curious, it wasn’t until I’d overheard his conversation with Jared today that I knew it had something to do with his childhood.
And I realized that I didn’t know Jaxon Trent at all.
He rubbed his forearm and narrowed his eyes briefly before relaxing. “If you could get a tattoo, what would it be?”
I blinked, shocked by his question. “Um.” I laughed softly, thinking. “I thought about a set of angel wings, I guess. With one of the wings broken,” I admitted.
“It has something to do with your past?”
I nodded. “Yes.”
“And it’s something you want to remember?” he pressed.
“Yes.”
“That’s why I don’t have any tattoos,” he concluded. “People get tattoos for all kinds of reasons, but they’re always badges of what has made them who they are. I don’t care to remember what and who made me this way. The people that gave me life. The people that brought me up . . .” He shook his head, defiant. “The places I’ve seen or anything I’ve done. It’s all in my head, anyway. I don’t want it on my body, too. I don’t care about anything that much.”
