Amy's Review

I enjoyed Tamar & Lyrik's story. Tamar has been very standoff-ish from the beginning of this series, and we learn why in this story, and my heart just wants to break for her. Lyrik also has his issues, but I think he was overly hard on himself. I didn't like that Lyrik expected Tamar to open up to him, but wouldn't give her the same in return. I enjoyed the epilogue, and I'll definitely continue this series, as I can't wait to read Austin's story.

4 Stars

Lynn's Review
Lyrik West is one messed up rock star.

Tamar “Red” King is hiding from an awful past.

It’s only right these two collide in life.

I’m torn with my feelings for this book. On one hand I liked the story and felt it pulled from deep down in my emotional reservoir. But on the other hand there were a couple things that bothered me while reading it. One being how Tamar  was always referencing Lyrik as “boy”. He wasn’t a boy. He was a mid or late 20-something man. And the constant usage of “…this boy…” or “my boy” was annoying to me. The second thing was we didn’t learn until almost the end of the book what made Lyrik so angry throughout the whole story. And that came right smack dab in the middle of another super climactic event that made it feel like it was out of place. I understand there’s always a build-up of a storyline. But I think this one would’ve been so much better had it been placed elsewhere in the entirety of the book.

I’m not going to say I disliked this story, but I’m not saying I was blown away by it either. I give it 3 ¾ stars. I rarely give out five stars. Those are for the books that I feel do blow me away. So 3 ¾ really isn’t all that bad coming from me.

And I was given this book as an ARC for my honest review.

Excerpt Two
My smile faded when I looked back again to where he lingered near the door. My head drifted to the side to take him in as his expression shifted through a thousand emotions.
Regret. Sorrow. Lust.
And a longing that nearly brought me to my knees.
Desire trembled through my body.
I wanted to crawl inside him.
To discover every secret.
Even though I got the crushing feeling knowing him would be the end of me.
Cautiously, he edged forward.
The air filled up with him. So thick I wasn’t sure I could breathe.
Gently he wound his fingers through my hair. Not so gently he tugged my head back and pinned me with that stare. Slowly he dipped down, my stomach in a thousand blissful knots as he left a dizzying trail of kisses down my neck.
Soft, silken lips.
Little flicks of tongue.
Tingles spread in a wildfire of sensation.
Then his voice was at my ear. Whispering belief. “Blue.”
Blue. Blue. Blue.
She was so scared and unsure and innocently brave. Because she wanted all the things I’d learned the hard way the world didn’t have to give. But she wanted me to fight for them anyway.
Callused fingertips trailed down my sides, and I trembled when they edged under the hem of my shirt. Skin to skin.
“Is this okay?” he asked, his voice like gravel.
My answer scraped from my throat. “Yes.”
Lyrik pulled my tee over my head, slow but sure.
A cool rush of air sent a rush of chills skating free across the flames. My chest heaved as Lyrik stared down at me in my jeans and bra. Eating me up with that irresistible intensity.
I knew my eyes were wild as I looked up at him. My pulse hammered and my spirit thrashed.
“Blue,” he murmured again as he went down onto his knees. He peeked up at me every few seconds as he worked the bandage free from my side. My belly shook as he peeled the bandage away and exposed the statement that had been etched into my side over my ribs, from my hip bone to just under my arm pit on the left side. And I knew the area needed to be cleaned. But somehow right then, I didn’t care.
I just wanted him to see.
The four simple letters were written in a big, scrolling font, and swirls and flowers extended from the first and last letters.
Lightly, he drummed his fingertips over the design, not quite touching the raw skin.
His unyielding gaze latched onto mine. “I think you already have.”

Excerpt Three
For one night, I wanted it. I wanted her secrets. I wanted to sink my fingers in and take for myself. She was the exact kind of contradiction I craved.
The push and pull.
But this time the pull was too great to ignore.
I traced my thumbs along the delicate slope of her neck. Dragged them across the soft, soft skin. Her pulse was racing with a violent beat. I forced her to look at me while my entire body ran hot.
“Tell me what you want, Red.” It slipped out in a rough murmur.
In the distance, thunder rolled. Those blue eyes flashed. Flashed with courage and fear.
Something about it made me shake.
Almost defiantly, she lifted her chin, and she reached up with her small hands and grasped me around the wrists.
“I want you to kiss me.”
Leave it to Red to ask for the thing I didn’t want to give. Memories cut a path of panic through my consciousness. Reminding me of what I’d done. Of why I could never get too close.
Of where my loyalty truly lay.
Clenching my jaw, I gripped her tighter. My heart was giving its all to reject this. Screaming at me to wise up and to do it fast. To turn my back and walk away. No doubt, my feet had officially crossed into the forbidden zone. Out of bounds.
Red was trying to take me places I didn’t want to go.
On the inside, I struggled like a goddamned madman. Torn between lashing out like I’d done the last time she’d been tempting me with the need to sink inside her, to discover the countless secrets she had lying underneath, and gathering her up and letting her in on all of mine.
I was at an all-out war with my instincts. The f*cked-up thing was I didn’t even know what those were anymore.
Not when it came to her.
Wavering, I rocked forward in indecision then rocked back. Getting closer to those full red lips with each pass.
Her attention flitted over my face. They jumped from my eyes to my mouth and back again. She fisted my suit jacket.
“What do you want?” she demanded, turning the question on me. Her voice was a brazen, needy mix of the siren who had no issue with putting me in my place and the soft vulnerability that kept seeping through.
My tongue darted out and swept across my bottom lip.
Dying for a taste.
“F*ck it.”
Figured she was going to kill me, anyway.
