Love was my weakness.
In the light of the truth, no one can hide.
Derek had ignited a spark inside of my heart, a hope for a love I never expected to find. However, our connection lacked the substance it needed to burn. Weakened with resentment, our relationship crumbled under deception, slowly dissolving into ash.
I had sacrificed myself for him and paid the price.
By the time Brandon entered into my life, the longing in my heart had turned cold. But fate was not done with me. His crystal blue eyes and fluid touch revived a wish that had been frozen in time. He gave me hope once again.
Hope is a dangerous thing, especially when you dare to dream.

4.5 STARS
Liquid and Ash was quite the surprise for me. I didn’t know what to expect going into it and I wasn’t sure within the first few chapters if I would like it. I have to say it really resonated with me and I connected with Penny. I did struggle with the beginning a bit and the flashbacks. They were pulling me out of the story too much. I like flashbacks but in this case it threw me off.
Penny is a girl who has always had a deep need to be loved. She thought she found that love with Derek. As the years go by deception and resentment destroy their marriage. The demise of their relationship hits her hard and she has to dig deep to figure out what she wants. Penny feels so broken, her desperation to be loved drove her choices, and now in a way she is paying the price. Penny is hurt by Derek but more than that she is angry with herself for giving up on her dreams to be with him.
In the midst of Penny drowning she meets Brandon and a spark ignites. Penny is at a constant battle with herself. Brandon is someone she can be herself with but should she start things with Brandon or fix herself?
Penny soon moves out of her home with Derek and starts working and saving for school. I loved her determination to move forward but the pull to Brandon is strong. Penny knows in her head she needs to focus on herself but she also wants Brandon.
A woman with a dream of being loved is a danger to herself because she will see it in places it doesn’t belong and doesn’t exist
I loved the humanity in Penny. I wanted her to be strong and learn to love herself but there were moments I was worried she would lose herself again. I really liked Brandon, he is dealing with his own demons and being with Penny allowed him to move forward and heal.
No longer the girl seeking acceptance, I was becoming a woman who wore her scars like beauty marks. Brandon had a lot to do with that. He was always challenging me, questioning my actions, and offering me a new perspective. He liked it when I fought him, and I liked him for making me fight. It forced me to stay honest with myself.
Ultimately Liquid and Ash is Penny’s love story. Penny learns to pick up the pieces of her life on her own. Her journey is hard because she still feels that desperation for love at the surface. She learns that she is stronger than she ever thought she was. Her journey felt authentic and I really understood Penny, from her father’s abandonment to how it affected her choices in men, I got her. I loved the choice she made toward the end of the book; she needed that final step to heal. I wanted a bit more out the end of the book and the epilogue but overall I really loved this story.
Well done!
