Review Buns, The Hudson Valley series by Alice Clayton

Title: Buns
Author: Alice Clayton
Series: The Hudson Valley
Release Date: May 23rd 2017

Synopsis

Clara Morgan is living the dream, if you can call rebranding hotels that are desperate for a new life and running any kind of marathon a dream. Which she does. But the career she loves and the endurance races that keep her adrenaline pumping have kept her too busy to put down any roots. Growing up in foster care, she’s never been able to establish traditions of her own, which may be why she’s fascinated by the rituals that generations-old family resorts are known for. She’s especially interested in the Bryant Mountain House, and not just for their secret recipe for the yummy, gooey, can’t-get-enough-of Hot Cross Buns….

Archie Bryant, the man with the Buns, is fifth generation and one-day-owner of the charming yet run-down Bryant Mountain House in Bailey Falls, New York. He’s determined to save his family’s legacy from the wrecking ball the old-fashioned way—by gritting his teeth and doing what needs to be done. There’s no way Archie will be influenced by the new hotel branding expert his father brought in to turn one hundred and fifty years of tradition on its head just to attract a faster, younger, slicker crowd. But when some of Clara’s ideas start bringing in new, paying customers, Archie can’t deny that she may have just given him a shot at keeping his resort open.

It’s sticky, it’s messy, it’s sweet, it’s Buns.

Review by Amy

This may have been my favorite of the series......but I've enjoyed all of them. Clara is brought in to Bryant Mountain House to revive it. Clara is Roxie and Natalie's friend from culinary school and they're excited she's going to be around them for a bit (and maybe hoping she'll become enthralled with Bailey Falls, as they did). Archie Bryant is the next in line to run his family's hotel; he's a bit set in the "that's the way we've always done it" mind. Watching him and Clara battle each other with was entertaining.

Clara had a rough upbringing, although we don't get much information on that, other than that she was bounced to several foster homes, and a general feeling of abandonment. She avoids traditional holidays with her friends, almost like she feels she doesn't deserve to be there because of how she grew up. Both Natalie and Roxie want nothing more than for Clara to feel like she belongs somewhere, and they think Bailey Falls might be the place for her.

Clara and Archie butt heads a lot in this book....and a lot of that in the beginning is due to Archie reacting to her hotel renovations before letting her get the full plan out there; towards the end of the book, the headbutting is more Clara's fault due to the above mentioned issues. We also learn that Archie is a widower; he lost his wife Ashley to cancer several years ago. While he admits he misses her, he doesn't dwell on it and it doesn't prevent him from pursuing Clara. We get splashes of Roxie& Leo and Natalie & Oscar, as well as several hotel workers who helped keep the story light at times.

I was a bit frustrated with Clara at times for not just talking to Archie and trying to work out some of those things going on in her head. Their adventures together were entertaining....the race up the mountain, the meteor shower, cooking class at the diner, ice skating, the Tough Mudder race....all sorts of fun going on there.

Overall, I think this was a great story. I'd love to see more of this group of friends, as we don't get a lot of future glimpses with them. I don't know if there's more planned for this series, but if there is, I'll be reading it.

Release Blitz - Just a Little Junk by Stylo Fantome

Title: Just a Little Junk
Author: Stylo Fantôme
Genre: Romantic Suspense/Comedy
Release Date: May 22, 2017

Blurb

Jodi Morgan is having a bad weekend.

After partying a little too hard, she wakes up with a monster hangover and almost no recollection of the night before. So imagine her surprise when she looks in her trunk and instead of finding a spare tire, she finds the last guy she'd danced with before blacking out.

Who is he? How did he get in there? How did he die? And oh dear lord, did she kill him!?

When her older brother's best friend offers to help, things start looking up. They've known each other since she was thirteen, and ten years later, he still treats her like a little kid - surely, committing felonies has to trigger some sort of spark. Together, they wind up going on an adventure that takes them all over Los Angeles. From raves to penthouses to strip clubs. All in the search for the answer to her question.

Who is the dead guy in my trunk!?

Warning: This book contains some dark humor, a lot of witty banter, and two characters making more bad decisions than good ones. Also contains adult themes, language, and graphic sexual activity.

4 Stars

This was a fun story to read.  Jodi and Archer have been friends for years; both come from somewhat poor backgrounds, but are striving for more.  Jodi has also harbored a crush on Archer since she first met him (he's her older brother's best friend).

After a night at the club, Jodi finds a body in the trunk of her car with no recollection as to how it got there.  She runs to Archer (they're neighbors) and is freaking out.  He convinces her to not call the cops and to try and figure it out themselves.  Their plan goes haywire several times along the way,  as they slowly recall the events of the night before and how the dead guy ended up in her trunk.

The shenanigans abounded and it seemed like they were always running from some new threat.  Their time at the rave was funny and sweet.  I'll say I didn't fully see the little twist that came, but it made sense as to how everything pulled together.  All-in-all, it was an enjoyable story, which is nothing less than what I'd expect from Stylo.

EXCERPT: Aryas knew her. He knew what she liked. He knew how she played. He knew exactly what would make her squirm in her seat. And he knew precisely how long it had been since she’d had her kink. “You’re throwing down the gauntlet,” she accused quietly. “You feel like picking up the glove?” he shot back, shaking the piece of paper at her. She stared into Aryas’s eyes. No strings. Anything she wanted to do to get him off. When he was done with her, he’d vanish from her life. Her gaze dropped to the paper. “Be you, and we’ll make it interesting, lay five grand on that fucker, he’ll give you one go and then he’ll move on,” Aryas pushed, but it was a dare. She looked back at him. A dare. Yes, he knew her. “No reflection on you and your skills, which are sublime, my beautiful baby.” He grinned wicked grin. “Just that this guy is unbreakable. There’s no edge for him any Domme can get anywhere near to push him off and that’s what he’s looking for. Being taken to the farthest edge and shoved right the fuck over.” Taken to the farthest edge. Evangeline was not into that. She wasn’t into extreme. Not like many who were into that in the life. No, the edges she coasted were exactly what Aryas wasn’t quite saying, but she read this guy couldn’t handle. Unless he had the right Mistress to lead the way. Damn it all, she was getting wet. “Five grand?” she snapped. Aryas pressed his lips together and she was too peeved to get more peeved that he did it to suppress his amusement. He unpressed them to confirm, “Five grand. But Leenie, babe, just to get it straight, he walks away from you at first meet, we’re even. It’s only if you get a crack at him the bet is on.” She lifted her nose at the same time she snatched the paper from his hand, declaring, “He won’t walk away.” “He might,” Aryas said gently, and his sudden loss of humor and careful tone made her focus on him again. “Beware of that. He’s done it before. In some ways, he doesn’t give a shit about anything. In some ways, he can be frustratingly choosy.” “If I want him, he walks away, I’ll still get him,” she announced.

✮✮✮And don’t miss the first standalone title in the Honey Series… THE DEEP END! ✮✮✮

About THE DEEP END:

Enter a decadent sensual world where gorgeous alpha males are committed to fulfilling a woman's every desire…

Olivier isn’t sure what he’s gotten himself into when he joins the Honey Club, only that a dark part of him hungers for the lifestyle offered by this exclusive club. Here, no boundary will be left untested…and one's deepest fantasies will become an exquisite reality.

When Amélie invites Olivier to surrender, she gives the alpha submissive what he craves. Soon they both find themselves falling harder than they ever anticipated—but as their connection deepens, the truth about Olivier’s past could destroy everything…

Gripping and seductive, The Deep End is the first book in a sensational new series from bestselling author Kristen Ashley.

About Kristen Ashley: Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA and nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorise and she hadn't taken her first breath!). Her mother said they took Kristen away, put her Mom back in her room, her mother looked out the window, and Gary was on fire (Dr. King had been assassinated four days before). Kristen's Mom remembered thinking it was the end of the world. Quite the dramatic beginning. Nothing's changed. Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana and has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus, she's blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her family was (is) loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. They all lived together on a very small farm in a small farm town in the heartland. She grew up with Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched). Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up. And as she keeps growing, it keeps getting better.

Amy's 5 star review

Penny Reid has a way of drawing me into her books; the banter between her characters is witty, fun and sometimes just odd.....but it works so well for her.

Marie is one of the Knitting girls and we've gotten to know her little by little throughout the series. We know she's loyal, hardworking and maybe a bit down on her luck when it comes to romance. Marie is endearing in this book; I actually quite enjoyed her and her wit, and her belief that she deserved nothing less than everything she wanted when it came to her heart.

Professor Matt Simmons was introduced briefly during Greg and Fiona's story line. He happens to be their neighbor, and also was a boy Fiona babysat when she was younger. He's a bit of a quirky duck, but it works for him. He's passionate about his work and doesn't see himself needing any type of romantic involvement.

Marie and Matt meet on a blind date/dating site hookup. She's disappointed when the man who shows up doesn't match his profile, but carries on. There's a misunderstanding and Marie leaves. She tells the girls about her weird date, and then runs into Fiona and Greg's neighbor....who happens to be her weird date. After Matt explains the situation, Marie is even more upset, and rightfully so, but the situation eventually leads to them working together.

Both Marie and Matt believe the other has "friend-zoned" them, while secretly pining for each other. Their friendship to love match was fun to watch and the research they do together was fun and often left me laughing. I also loved that we get lots of glimpses of the Knitting girls and their significant others. Quinn is grumpy as ever, doting over Janie and her pregnancy; Greg and Fiona are their sweet couple selves that everyone strives to be; Alex and Sandra are still going strong; and Nico and Elizabeth, although separated due to their work, still find time for each other and are going strong as well. There were a couple of did-not-see-that-coming moments, but I think the set up towards Kat an Dan's book is great....now it's just a waiting game.

I loved that Penny Reid doesn't dumb down her books. I feel myself learning new things when I read her works and that makes me happy. Matt and Marie have definitely captured my heart and I absolutely enjoyed their story.

Shanda's 4 star review

Marie has been trying her hand at online dating for two years and she is over it. Her one last try ends in a disaster date with a guy that is just weird. He proceeds to ask her all kinds of strange questions and Marie basically runs screaming from the date. Fast forward to her usual knitting get to together with friends and guess who shows up? Disaster date guy!
Turns out Matt is her friends neighbor. Marie finds out that Matt was on a fact finding mission. He is interested in building a robot that can replace human affection and he was using the input from their “date” for his project. Even though Marie is irritated by Matt and the situation he starts to grow on her. Marie soon realizes he can also help her with an article she is writing. These two embark on a friendship and feelings soon take over. It’s not long before miscommunication gets in their way when they both believe they are friend zoning the other.
Marie and Matt were adorable together. Due to the friend zoning every time these two shared a look or a moment the tension was amazing. The slow burn and anticipation of them together are my favorite things in slow burn romance. When they do get together it is pretty damn hot!!! And Matt is a dirty talker. Yowza!
As always Penny Reid brings you smart romance that gives you the feels. Dating-Ish really focuses on intimacy and human connection. And as you can expect Ms. Reid gives you a unique and fascinating take on this subject. Well done and I can’t wait for the next book.

Review- When It's Real by Erin Watt

When It’s Real by Erin Watt

From #1 New York Times bestselling author duo Erin Watt comes the addictive contemporary tale of a teen rock star in need of an image makeover and the teen girl hired to be his fake girlfriend.

Meet Oakley Ford-teen celebrity, renowned pop star, child of famous movie stars, hottie with millions of fangirls… and restless troublemaker. On the surface he has it all, but with his home life disintegrating, his music well suddenly running dry, and the tabloids having a field day over his outrageous exploits, Oakley's team decides it's time for an intervention. The result: an image overhaul, complete with a fake girlfriend meant to show the world he's settled down.

Enter seventeen-year-old Vaughn Bennett-devoted sister, part-time waitress, the definition of "normal." Under ordinary circumstances she'd never have taken this gig, but with her family strapped for cash, she doesn't have much of a choice. And for the money Oakley's team is paying her, she figures she can put up with outlandish Hollywood parties and a team of publicists watching her every move. So what if she thinks Oakley's a shallow, self-centered jerk? It's not like they're going to fall for each other in real life…right?

Oakley needs to straighten up his image and Vaughn is the way his publicity team thinks that should happen. Never mind that Oakley is kind of an arrogant jerk at the beginning....he actually comes around a bit. Vaughn and her sister could use the money to help keep them afloat since their parents’ deaths several years earlier.

Vaughn is a sweetheart, although a bit of a dreamer. She finds herself gradually feeling more enamored by Oakley, and eventually, as we all can guess, their "fake" relationship becomes something more. There's interference from well-meaning managers and assistants, Oakley's over-the-top father and his mom just really want to re-establish a connection with him.

Overall, this was a sweet story of young love and finding what really matters to you.
