Elect (Eagle Elite, #2) by Rachel Van Dyken

Would you die for the one you love?
Nixon Abandonato made his choice. And now he has to pay the price. Tracey is the love of his life, but being with him has made her a target of his family's enemies. The only way to keep Trace alive is convince the world she means nothing to him.

Trace Rooks has fallen irrevocably in love with the son of her family's sworn rival, and she knows in her bones nothing can tear them apart. Until Nix suddenly pushes her away and into the arms of his best friend... But Trace isn't ready to give up on a future with Nix--and if he won't fight for them, she will.

In the end, a sacrifice must be made. A life for a life. For what better way to cover a multitude of sins than with the blood of a sinner . .

**************************************************************************************

Received this as an ARC an let me just say...ho-lee $*** batman!

My mind is still reeling!! Just when you thought you had it figured out a new twist to the plot is added. I am not even sure where to start my review, so I will begin with this...

The story is told through Nixon, Chase, and Phoenix' s perspectives. Which to me adds to a thicker plot, especially with Phoenix's story added in.

"Every saint has a past, every sinner has a future"

That quote really says A LOT about this book and each of the characters.
Nixon Abandonato

Nixon, if I could describe him in one word it would be "selfless". To me he is one of the most ultimate BBF' s.
He doesn't have a selfish bone in his body, and to me that is the ultimate act of love. He truly is one of my all time favorite characters.

"All it takes is one kiss. One kiss can save you. One kiss can ruin you. And my kisses? They better ruin you, Trace."
Chase Winters

Chase, loyal, protective, and a great sense of humor. But when it comes to love, he is quite selfish or maybe it is desperation. I can't fault him for it and I truly do love his character. He plays a vital role now and will continue to do so in the next book. I see a lot of growing and changing to come for him.

This book ends in a big ole Chase cliffhanger. I must say, I saw it coming...not quite to the effect we were left with, but it certainly was there. I. Can't. Wait!

"Because you forget, and regardless of the outcome, your success was in the journey."
Phoenix DeLang

As for Phoenix, this book was his journey to redemption, absolution, and sacrifice. You get to go on his journey into the forced life he had and how it came to be and why he ended up the way he did. You really see him grow and he does end up making the ultimate sacrifice to end all wars and finally bring peace to all 5 families.

I don't often give 5 stars, but this book was just "it" for me. The writing is perfect and I found the story to be very deep. I cannot even count how many highlights I have in this book, but I can't wait to go back through them.

This book, to me, definitely earns a 5 "pistol whipping" stars ;)

Bravo, Rachel, on such a fantastic book!!

Kissed by a Dark Prince (Eternal Mates Romance Series Book 1) Felicity Heaton
Olivia thinks it’s her lucky night when a dangerously handsome unconscious fae ends up on her inspection table. He’s her chance to redeem herself with her employer, the demon-hunting organisation, Archangel. But when the tall, dark and deadly immortal warrior awakes, she gets much more than she bargained for…

Attacked by his enemy in the elf kingdom, the last thing Prince Loren expects when he comes around is a beautiful angel watching over him and medical technology of the mortal realm. Hazy from his injuries, all he can focus on is the pulse ticking in her throat and the sweet allure of her blood.
One single bite reveals she is his eternal mate, triggering a bond between them that will leave him weakened until it is completed… or broken, and pulling Olivia into the crossfire of his ancient feud.

To protect his people and his mate from the machinations of a madman, Loren must risk everything by working with Olivia at Archangel to find a way to break the bond blossoming between them.

But will Loren be strong enough to place duty before desire and give up the one thing he has waited millennia for and craves above all others—his eternal mate? And will Olivia be able to resist the incredible heat that burns between them and the temptation of her dark prince’s kiss?

Kissed by a Dark Prince – Excerpt

The prince dismissed the male again. This time, he obeyed and left. Olivia waited until he had closed the wooden door before she moved her attention back to the prince and relaxed a fraction. The man in the room with her had bitten and kidnapped her, but had said he wouldn’t hurt her. If she had to choose between him and the one he had called Bleu, who had looked at her as if she were a pest to be eradicated, she would choose her blood-drinking captor over the homicidal maniac.

“Continue,” he said and she half expected him to use that regal wave on her. If he tried it, she might be inclined to relocate his testicles after all. She might be human, but she wasn’t going to let anyone order her around, not even a powerful immortal prince. She had enough of that from her superiors.

“What condition did you find me in?”

“You’d taken one hell of a beating... don’t you remember fighting?” she said and he shook his head and sat on the edge of his bed. Rumpled purple covers. Barely dressed male. She could do the math. He had woken and come to take her shortly afterwards, because he couldn’t recall the fight and how he had ended up at Archangel. He looked like the sort of man who liked to be in control and hated weakness, and not remembering the events that had seen him dumped unconscious at a demon-hunting organisation were probably driving him mad. “It must have been epic.”

The light in his eyes faded and he looked off to his right, staring at the foot of the row of wardrobes.
“My battles with this particular enemy always are.” Something drifted in his rich purple eyes, a shadow of remorse that left her feeling he would rather not fight this enemy. He cursed again, pushed to his feet and paced, taking long agitated strides up and down the room.
Olivia leaned back against the wall and studied him in silence, giving him time to think and beginning to relax.

He was beautiful, his tall lean figure shifting sensually with each stride, working his muscles like a symphony. Every so often, the markings she had followed with her fingers would flash into existence and he would growl, seemingly irritated by them, and glare at her, as if she were to blame.
Olivia lost track of time, her fear melting away and her guard dropping with it. What was he thinking? He looked melancholy at times, pained, but angry at others. Feelings flitted across his handsome face, rapidly changing his expression, drawing her to him all the more.
He seemed sad for some reason, a terrible sorrow that shone in his eyes, fathomless and painful. Mixed in with that sadness was a sense of lethalness though, the danger she had originally felt in his presence, a feeling he exuded like an aura. It should have warned her away from him. Instead, she found herself moving away from the wall and towards him, lured by an inexplicable need to comfort him and ease the pain she swore she could feel in him.

“Are you okay?”

He stopped dead and looked across at her, his expression open and blank, as though her question had caught him off guard. His look hardened again a second later and he pivoted on his heel and crossed the room to her. He halted inches from her, towering over her, making her feel nervous and unsure of herself. The longer he stood there studying her with those intense purple eyes without saying anything, the more on edge she felt, until her insides had twisted into tight knots and she couldn’t bear it anymore.

“Have you finished questioning me now?” she blurted out.

He nodded.

“I can go home?”

“I am sorry but I cannot allow that to happen.” He looked beyond her left shoulder, towards the blue curtains and the doors. “My enemy has made you a target, a well played move on his part and one I did not predict or even consider.”

Her anger came back to a rolling boil and she opened her mouth to give him hell, but he stole her voice. His eyes came back to meet hers and he lifted his hand, slowly reached towards her and brushed aside the collar of her white coat. He caressed the marks on the left side of her throat, sending a hot achy shiver through her.

“I have made you a target.” Those words sent a different sort of shiver through her. This one not at all pleasant.

She raised her hand to touch her throat and ended up covering his hand instead. His skin was cool beneath hers. His nostrils flared, his eyes brightened and the pointed tips of his ears extended and sharpened. He bared his fangs at her and shifted back, pulling his hand away from her touch.
Olivia’s heart leaped into overdrive, thundering against her ribs, and her hand shook, fear freezing her feet in place.
The prince looked ill but, at the same time, there was an unmistakable spark of desire in his eyes.
It might have flattered her if she hadn’t been clinging to what he had said, repeating it in her head and growing increasingly angry with each cycle. She was a target for a maniac who had beaten this immortal male close to death?

“What the hell is going on here?” she snapped and advanced on him, surprised when he actually retreated, as if he feared her. No way a powerful male like him would fear a little woman like her. He hadn’t liked it when she had touched him. He had reacted strongly to it. Maybe he feared she would touch him again if he let her get close enough. She wanted to touch him alright. She wanted to crack his nose with her fist. “I want to know what’s happening because I have the feeling my life is on the line and I didn’t sign up for this shit. You bit me... I damned well didn’t ask you to violate me... and I want to know how your abuse of my body and my rights has made me a target.”
The prince held his hands up and she halted, breathing hard to settle her volatile feelings. Getting angry with him probably wouldn’t solve anything. If she was in danger, she was probably going to need his help. He had dragged her into this. He could damn well get her out of it unscathed.

“The reason your comrades found me so close to your facility is because my enemy left me there... it is a twisted game... he could have killed me but I would not have suffered.” He sounded too damn calm and he looked it too.

Olivia couldn’t see how he could be so relaxed about all of this. Some psychopath had beaten him close to death and dropped him on her doorstep, and it was all a game? That wasn’t a game. That was sick.

“And he wants you to suffer... why?” She couldn’t hold the angry note from her voice. He had wanted answers and had brought her here. Well, now she wanted some damn answers of her own.

“It is not for you to know,” he said quietly.

It damned well was. “Why did he dump you with us? Did he think Archangel would torture you?”
He shook his head, the solemn look returning to his eyes. “No. He knew you would torture me.”
Olivia frowned. “I don’t get it. What do you mean? I said did he think we would torture you and you said no, and then you said he knew we would... that doesn’t make sense. I warn you, I am liable to relocate your testicles if I don’t start getting some straight answers.”

He took a step back. “It was a straight answer. Not we... you... he knew you would torture me.”

“Me?” Her eyes shot wide and indignation joined the ranks of her feelings. “I’m a doctor. I know I work for a demon-hunting group, but that doesn’t mean I would torture one.”

He glanced down at his boots and then back at her, his expression troubled. He growled, exposing his fangs, and shoved his fingers through his black hair.
“He knew what you were when he dropped me there and he knew what I would do,” he barked the words at her, his expression wild and desperate, the look of a man firmly on the edge. He stepped towards her and reached for her, and then let his hands fall to his sides and cursed.

“What... bite me?” She touched the marks on her neck, feeling the pronounced bumps where his fangs had punctured her. What had he done by biting her?

The prince closed the distance between them and she tipped her head back, holding his gaze. He frowned and she gasped as his fingers settled against her jaw. He slid his hand along it to cup her cheek, his eyes locked on hers, drawing her into their purple depths until she felt lost.

“Bind you to me.”

MY REVIEW
'Kissed by a Dark Prince' is the first book in a new series from Felicity Heaton. I have been (not so) patiently waiting for this book since Felicity first mentioned her ideas for the series some time ago.
Set in London around the same time as the VET books, the Eternal Mates series introduces another world to explore and is full of new and interesting paranormal species - this delights me as PNR is my favourite genre!

The heroine, Olivia, is a female scientist who works with a demon hunting organisation called 'Archangel' - there she studies paranormal specimens to identify & discover more about them.
Loren, our Hero is an elf prince who mysteriously turns up literally  on the doorstep of the building Olivia works in.
Waking up in a strange place, injured and out of sorts Loren needs blood to help him heal. Disoriented and with the allure of her blood too much to resist, Loren bites Olivia and a mating bond between the 2 of them starts to form.
We soon discover there are unknown, darker forces at work and Olivia & Loren meeting is more than just a coincidence........

As ever, Felicity brings us an action packed, fast paced story with a deliciously hot hero, a feisty heroine, mystery, some twists & turns, a bit of humour and a healthy dose of heat & passion.
Throughout the story we are introduced to Sable, a demon hunter who works with Olivia, and Bleu who is Loren's best friend & right hand man - I <3 Bleu and can't wait to read more about him....

There's a few other characters involved in Loren & Olivia's story new & old (see if you can spot a surprise appearance by someone from VET!! - can't wait to see who else pops up in future books!)  ;-)  but rather than tell you about them all I'm gonna leave you to meet them yourself - I'm really looking forward to catching up with them all in their own stories!!

I am a huge fan of Felicity's work and have loved all that I've read. Kissed by a Dark Prince is a definite 5* hit for me and I'm sure the rest of The Eternal Mates series is gonna be just as fantastic!!!
Fans of Felicity's books will love this new world - and if you haven't yet read anything by Felicity, grab yourself a copy of 'Kissed' and see what you've been missing!!!

Songbird by Lisa Edward

Songbird by Lisa Edward

Songbird is book 1 in a series.
This book had some of the most original love (love, not sex, there are sex scenes, but that's not what I'm talking about here) scenes I ever remember reading:  laying together in a hammock in the rain on a tropical beach, riding over a city in a hot air balloon, floating in the ocean while being held.  It's very romantic.  Most of the books I've read in the past few months don't really have the romance factor so reading this was a welcomed experience.  Also the setting is Australia, somewhere I would love to visit.

Tara is beautiful and musically talented, and men just can't seem to help being drawn to her.

Riley is a romantic, sweetheart, gorgeous military man.  He's the man of Tara's dreams, and she falls head over hills in love with him.  He's perfect pretty much except for the fact that he is always having to leave because of his job.

Cole is a hot, sexy, bad boy musician.  The girls fall at his feet.  He has the absolute best since of humor and the strongest sexual pull of any man.  From the moment they met, Tara and Cole have an instant true connection.  He's always there for her.

I loved both men.  I can see the reasons to choose and not choose both.  The story is filled with many trying times for Tara.  Which way will her life take her?  I'm looking forward to book 2 to find out.

Review (CONTAINS SPOILERS)

TEAM CARTER! I LOVE CARTER MASON! #CARTERHOOKER #SOCCERTHIGHS

So...the build up to this book, for those of us who follow the whole Bass/Emma/Carter love triangle, has been a dramatic fight, the battle known as Basswhore vs Carterhookers.  We've all been so opinionated about how we wanted the story to go and so aggressive in defending our men.

Okay, so now I've gotta break it down.

The Backstory -
Emma loves both men.  Both men have did her wrong.  Both men are in love with her.

Oh, Pamela, well done, lovely lady!  I loved it!

This book starts with Bass and Emma back together again.  Things are rocky in their relationship because of Nikki (stupid bitch).  Because of the disharmony, they end up broken up. Again.  Of course Carter is always waiting in background for Emma to return to him.  She did, and I loved it.  I was all Yes! Yes!  But, Bass and Emma are true loves and end up back together in the end.

CARTER
I love Carter even more after this book, if that was even possible.  What a man!  After one mistake, he has always been there for Emma for everything she needed ever, anytime, anything, anyhow, always.  Emma finds out she's pregnant with Bass's baby, and Carter offers to raise it as his own (because Bass is presumed dead).  He buys a house and baby furniture and sets up a wedding, totally prepared to step into the father and husband rolls.  Emma then drops him like a hot potato, as usual, to go back to Bass.  My heart hurt for Carter.  Yes, you damn Basswhores, I do feel that Emma and Bass were meant to be together, but Carter is my choice.  And out of the 3 of them, I do feel Carter has matured the most of the series.  I cannot wait for Carter's book Damaged to read the rest of his story.

Carter has had my heart since the beginning.  I love his soccer thighs, his sex appeal, his bottomless love...I just hope loosing Emma is a pain he can make it through to the other side without it changing him too much.  I can't wait to see more of him playing soccer (professionally by his book I think) and, I'm sure, having lots of hot sex scenes...and hopefully finally having a HEA.

Review
Defying the Odds is book 1 in the Battered Hearts series.
I read this book because it was suggested to me by a friend who knows my love for fighter men.  And Clay Powers is definitely now on my list!

Melody is a waitress in a diner in a small town.  She left her abusive husband after years of being physically and mentally beaten and is now trying to get her life back together while staying hidden from him.  She is just hoping to lay low and get by.

Clay is the world heavyweight UFC champion.  He doesn't enjoy the whole circus involved with being famous and makes no effort to be liked by the public.  Most people are scared of him and give him a wide berth.  When he isn't fighting, he's home in a small town and frequently eats at the town's small diner alone or with one of his only 2 friends.

Neither Melody nor Clay are looking for love.  And neither seems to be what the other would choose in the eyes of those around them and with their histories.  Will they be able to overcome their positions in life and be together or do their feelings not go deep enough?

I think the 2 friends of his have their own books in the series, and I plan to read them soon.

My Review
This book is not for the faint!  Do not read it if you need a definite good guy ending or if you can't handle rape and torture and most of all mind-fucking.  I was recommended the title by a friend that knows I love truly dark reads.

Boy Next Door is probably the best, truest anti-hero book I've ever read.  Not only does it deal with all of these super taboo subjects and fetishes, but it also contains true psychological disorders.  In most dark reads, even though one of the leads starts out asshole-ish, the reader ends up being won over by later actions.  The lead changes, even though that doesn't condone everything they have done, we still forgive them.  In this book, the lead is pretty mental and probably not quite possible of true change, and many things that happen in the book are just unforgivable.  Yet...the author has totally warped me into having feelings for Brandon!  WTF!!  How did that happen?  Some of the scenes are still bothering me now.  Not all of the worst scenes involve the lead Brandon.  His whole family is pretty fucked up!
