Excerpt

“Take a deep breath,” he moved on without comment, “duck ye head under the water, and exhale through ye nose. When ye run outta air, pop ye head back up.” I bit my lip and nodded, but I was less than confident.

“But, what if, what if the water goes up my nose?” I whispered. I sounded like a small child, but I was too panicked to care.

“Hold ye nose, love. Like this.” He pinched his nose and dropped under. It was silly, but I gasped. A second later he reappeared, shaking his head like a dog, spraying water all over me.  I smiled as I tried to hide from the spray. He seemed to know just how to diffuse me. It was bizarre, to say the least, but I was a little grateful.

“Yer turn. Do you need me to hold ye hand?” And sweet Drew was gone. He was back to his usual self.

I scoffed at that offer. “No.” But it might have been nice.

“One. Two.” I pinched my nose, and my pulse beat a million miles per minute. “Three!”

And I was under.

Oh God, oh God, breathe, no, don't breathe, just … don't breathe.

So I counted. I counted to ten and that was enough. I broke the surface, and gasped for breathe.

“Ye did good. Just next time, breathe first, aye?” Oh, yeah.

“Yeah, okay. Now what?”

“Now ye try holding yer breath for longer.”

“Really?”

“Aye. The fun comes later.”

I raised an eyebrow. The boys had clearly started to rub off on me. He smirked in return.
“How long can you hold your breath?”
“A while. Why? Ye want to challenge me?”
Do I? “Always.”
He smiled, and shook his head.
“One. Don't forget to take a deep breath in. Three!” I sucked a huge breath in and we ducked under the cool water.
I watched a little in awe as tiny bibles left Drew's nose. His hair sort of hovered in the water. He looked so beautiful that I found it easier to be still under the water just staring at him. He wiggled his eyebrows at me and it took all my strength not to laugh, expelling all my air. I did, however, poke my tongue out at him. It wasn’t the smartest thing to do, as when I pulled it back in it, tasted like manky seawater, and I wrinkled my face up in disgust. Surprisingly, I still managed to hold the little breath I had left in. Drew, however, lost all control at my tongue poking or face pulling, I wasn’t sure which, most likely both. He laughed heartily, expelling all his air in a great, big, gust, and had to go back up for air. I broke the surface to hear Drew coughing and spluttering.
“Ha! I won.” I’d be lying if it didn’t give me a little satisfaction that I sort-of won, by default but a win all the same.
“Ye’re a pisser. And ye didn’t win, ye cheated.”
“Oh, and you weren’t trying to cheat by wiggling your eyebrows at me? All’s fair in love and war, baby!”
“Which are we?” he asked softly, and my heart stuttered.

“Ah … definitely war.”

 Iza

It wasn’t an option for me, to stay in one place, make friends, and live. I had to keep moving.

First, I want to say that I was lucky enough to witness the growth of this story into what it now is. I read bits and pieces given to me by one of my fave Aussie ladies and author and I fell for Drew and I fell HARD! I also fell for this story because it’s not your usual girl-meets-boy story and they fall in love, break up, get back together and the end!

It’s so much more than that. It’s a story about finally finding something you were positively sure you never wanted nor needed. Love. It’s about accepting that being all alone is not what a human being needs and admitting it’s okay to rely and lean on others.

So, the book starts with Amelia/Mia, who is a chameleon character. She changes her identity and physical features very often, in order to hide, to blend in and stay incognito. She’s been on the run for the past six years and it has always worked just fine. She’d just up and leave wherever it was she was living. No friends, no relationships because it was easier to run that way.

See, one would think Mia is weak for doing that but she’s not. It’s in our genes, the fight-or-flight instinct. It’s always been. She’s afraid and she’s been through so many horrible things and she thinks she’s guilty of all that happening.

I stopped living in the past a long time ago. What if is just that, I guess: living in the past, because you wished your future could have been different.

But her entire world is turned upside-down when she falls into Drew’s arms in the small town she had recently settled in. From that moment on, she’s slowly but surely falling for the sexy Scotsman.

Ye really need to stop makin’ a habit of falling for me. Ye’ll give me a big head like, and I might get the wrong impression.

*sound the bagpipes*

Drew McKinley is the sexiest, sweetest and funniest Scot I have ever read about. He’s perfect, simply put. No, he’s not prim or proper. He owns a bar and he has a little bit of OCD and wow, he’s certainly possessive and doesn’t give up when he wants something. And he has demons of his own we only get glimpses of. But all those things? They make him perfect. He’s the kind of character that is realistic and believable.

Ye said I cannae kiss ye. Ye dinnae say anything about pawing ye. Paw away, Drew. Paw away.

Ahem. Sorry. Got distracted by that sexy brogue.

All in all, I give this book four and a half “strapping” stars! The story is not rushed, it slowly builds up and it isn’t insta-love. The characters simply click. You pretty much have everything in it. Funny scenes, HOT ones – there’s this scene with Drew and no clothes AND another one where he’s showing off his roots *waggling brows* - and towards the end, it will blow your mind. I haven’t seen that one coming but thank God, it was just a false alarm!

The only thing I can add to this is: there will be MORE Drew! Can’t wait to find out more about him!

Toni

We begin the story knowing that Mia is on the run from something. Slowly, from her thoughts and actions and through flashbacks, we find out most of her history. She's been on the run for a very long time, never making true connections or settling anywhere.

We don't know much about Drew except that he has a Scottish background.

"Have ye ever wondered what a true Scotsman wears under his kilt?"
best line ever and key to one of my fantasies

He is the owner of a local bar, and has many friends in the community.

Also he's a great lover.

"I own ye," he whispered in my ear and I shivered.

There is something in Drew which finally opens up a part of Mia that has always been closed.

I threw myself at Drew as soon as he was in reach. He absorbed the impact, gingerly putting his arms around me as I threw mine around his neck, and wrapped my legs around his middle. I held on like my life depended on it, and for the first time ever, I was home.

Even though we mostly tend to focus on figuring out her situation in this book, I feel there is a lot to Drew that we don't know. He always gives "knowing" looks. Sometimes his accent is different. I don't believe that he is bad or that he doesn't have genuine feelings for her. I just think there is something "more" to him than being just a bar owner (and sexy love god). I do think he is going to save her no matter what.

"I've got ye, love...I'll pull ye out of the darkness."

This book would be considered a partial CH because of the mysterious ending.

Phenomenal book! I couldn’t put it down! The love of Mia and Drew pulls you in and plants a seed deep in your mind. This book is a must read with a Scottish hottie.

This book lets people know that anyone can overcome the darkness, that there is always one last ray of light in the tunnel. That love IS possible in the most unexpected places.

The inspiring and uplifting story of Ahead of the Darkness is enough to help anyone see hope. And who can resist a man in a kilt?

Stage Dive series

Lick  #1

Play #2

Lead #3 --- Coming Soon

Deep #4 --- Coming Later This Year

Review

"He played with abandon and he looked like a god."

Oh, Mal! You naughty, naughty boy, you!

I really liked him in the first book of this series, Lick. He was there for Davie and Ev, not judging and helping them out.

He's always fun to be around, he's the riot of the band. He admitted it himself. He's the one to break up fights.

But there's just so much more to this character than his easy-going, laid-back, whatever attitude!

Anne, a.k.a. Pumpkin is a friend of Ev and Lauren's, living next door to them. She meets the crush of her teenage years and can hardly believe it when this unleashes a chain of events.

But she hangs on because a deal is made and it's in her benefit as well. And there are boundaries that won't be broken, rules set by Mal himself so all's well, right?

"Only I get the creepy eyes. Because I'm special." ~ Mal

Wrong.

"What was it about bad boys? Someone needed to invent a cure." ~ Anne

She gets in way too deep because she can't help it. I honestly don't blame her. I loved Davie, I fell for him from the very first scene, where he took care of a sick Ev. Mal has wormed himself into my heart, as well. As I said, there's more than meets the eye. He's trying to prove to everyone that the saying 'what you see is what you get' fits him but Anne isn't fooled.

"I'm the drummer from Stage Dive. I don't get kept awake by other people having wild sex. I keep them awake. I keep entire fucking neighborhoods awake." ~ Mal

From the bottom of my heart, I give this story, this book five stars. It made me laugh, it made me chuckle, swoon. It even made me change my mind about Jimmy, the asshole brother of David's. Now, I can't wait to read his story!

Oh and we also get more Ben and while at the other book I didn't think of him at all, now I do. Kylie Scott seems to have this talent.

I highly recommend this series.

"Life's a song, Anne. Let's play." ~ Mal

CARMEN JENNER AND SUGARTOWN SPOTLIGHT

CARMEN JENNER

WELCOME TO SUGARTOWN

ENJOY YOUR STAY

AUTHOR BIO

Carmen Jenner is a thirty-something author, doctor, pilot and CIA agent.
She's also a compulsive, flagrant prevaricator who gets to make things up for a living.

While Sugartown may not technically exist, Carmen grew up in a small Australian town just like it, and just like her characters, she always longed for something more. They didn't have an Elijah Cade, though. If they did, you can be sure she would have never left.

Welcome to Sugartown
(Sugartown #1)

Ana Belle never wanted anything more than to hang up her apron, jump on her Vespa and ride off into the sunset, leaving Sugartown in the dust.

Elijah Cade never wanted anything more than a hot meal, a side of hot arse and a soft place to lay his head at night where he could forget about his past.

But you know what they say about wanting: you always want what you can’t have.

Nineteen year-old virgin Ana is about to discover that’s not quite true because a six foot three, hotter than hell, tattooed, Aussie sex god just rode into town. He’s had a taste of her pie and he wants more– no really, Ana bakes pies for a living, get your mind out of the gutter.

She’d be willing to hand over everything tied up in a big red bow, there’s just one problem; Elijah has secrets dirtier than last week’s underwear. Secrets that won't just break Ana’s heart, but put her life at risk, too. When those secrets come to light, their relationship is pushed to breaking point.

Add to that a psychotic nympho best friend, an overbearing father, a cuter than humanly possible kid brother, a wanton womanizing cousin, the ex from hell, and more pies than you could poke a ... err ... stick ... at.

And you thought small towns were boring.

Welcome to Sugartown.

Enjoy Your Stay
(Sugartown #2)

The last thing Holly Harris expected was to wind up nineteen, knocked-up, and all alone. When Coop left to pursue his dreams of becoming a rock god, he left a tiny piece of him behind.

Holly wishes he hadn’t.

Jackson wishes he hadn’t.

Jackson Rowe tried filling the void his family left by drinking, screwing around, and leaving a string of heartbroken women in his wake. Moving back to Sugartown should have been easy, but he hadn’t counted on the fact his sometimes attraction to Holly would still be alive and kicking—and he sure as hell hadn’t counted on her being pregnant with another man’s baby.

They drive one another crazy, and yet they can’t stay away.

When old flames resurface, and even older wounds are torn open, can two people so similar make it work? Or will their stubbornness only drive them further apart?

*Content Warning. Intended for a mature 18+ audience. Contains angst, a crap-tonne of profanity, short-tempered Australian wildlife, and some very pregnant sex

BOOK REVIEW~ Beyond Solitude by Kit Rocha

When a motorcycle accident leaves Derek Ford riding a desk at the O’Kane compound, the last thing he needs is a sexy new assistant upending his office and his life. But Mia isn’t scared of her domineering boss. The friction between them generates an undeniable heat—but Mia will not be kept, and Ford will do anything to protect what’s his.

A few notes:

Unlike Beyond Temptation, this story stands separate from the main series plotline, with a tight focus on the hero and heroine as they travel through some parts of the Sectors we don't usually get to show.

Goodreads

This book gave more outside of what goes on inside the O'Kane compound. We see more of how the streets are for the non-O'Kane members. Also, we continue to collect information on all of the O'Kanes and the Sectors.

Ink talked in Sector Four. O'Kane ink screamed.

Mia is another product of Cerys's, but she hasn't found herself yet and doesn't have the ballsiness of Lexie. She has been sheltered so we get to see this new world through fresh eyes, some things we've grown to take for granted.

It's hard to remember I have a right to be...imperfect. It's the first rule—never let a man see the real you."

Derek Ford is injured, something we don't see much of in this post-Flare world. I mean a lot receive injuries, but none keep them long with the medical technology they possess. Ford didn't get treatment in time so has to heal the old fashioned way. Anyways, this does not take anything away from his hotness. He has it in spades, if anything, it add to it after finding out how he handled himself after his injury, walking miles and miles on a broken leg.

The rules were different for men, but no less restrictive. Never let them see you weak—the reason Ford had been hiding away in his office.

This book is an important building block to knowing all things O'Kane. I'm looking forward to the next.

This series just keeps amazing, Bree & Donna have become the ultimate puzzle masters and story tellers. In Beyond Solitude get a look into te day in a life of Derek Ford, who is the grain handler for O’Kane distillery. He is recovering from a near fatal motorcycle accident.

Mia has escaped from Sector 2 and is in need of protection and a job. Watching Ford come to grip with having actual feelings and dealing with being an ”O’Kane”.

 photo dearford_Fotor.jpg

We get our Dallas and Lex fix in this novella more than we have since their story in Beyond Control. As I continue the Beyond Series Kit Rocha just keeps solidifying my mentality that I am an
O’Kane For Life!

This, unfortunately, is a novella in the Beyond series by the two fab ladies that are Kit Rocha. It’s also just a small story of the big picture, where the focus is on the two main characters of this novella, not the others.

We return to Sector Four – thank God – where we immediately meet Derek Ford, who’s originally from Sector Eight. We’ve read about his accident in Beyond Jealousy but we truly get to know him from the first chapter. He’s in the Broken Circle, watching ‘the blonde girl’s’ show – Rachel – and of course that his body reacts to the absolute hedonism that’s taking place on stage.

“Shows at the Broken Circle weren’t just skin on display, bored dancers humping a pole and counting down the hours until closing. They were real, in-your-face revelries of lust.”

Our Ford is a little bit more mature than the other characters so far and well, he’s surly and moody and not real friendly. I noticed how he doesn’t really care to learn the girls’ names, even though he’s a part of the O’Kane bunch, having the tattoos to prove it.

But here’s where Mia comes into the picture and totally rocks his world.

The scene where they met for the very first time? *fanning self* Whoa!

“If I start stroking my dick right in front of you, you’re damn sure gonna be paying attention. Not just watching – riveted.”

“He’d stood there unashamedly erect, his belt undone, that top button popped open like a challenge.”

So, he’s surly, moody, grumpy but certainly not shy. At. All. He just thinks he has a bone to pick with life, in general and likes keeping people away.

“Oh, he was enchanting. Grumpy and rude and beautiful and so, so fun to look at.”

But Mia changes everything for him. She’s there to work for him. She’s there to stay. In Sector Four and working on becoming an O’Kane.

Because then she’s free. You see, Mia, just like Lex and Jade, was a whore. Well, she was raised and educated as one but she never got to actually become one. Let’s just say she had a nasty bastard as a patron who did nothing else but belittle her.

But she’s strong for running away and starting from scratch. And up until people find out she works for the O’Kanes, tattoos or not, the conditions she’s living in aren’t favorable.

“Her heart and soul weren’t for sale anymore. Neither was her body.”
So, all in all, the story is all about little Mia becoming independent and finding out what freedom tastes like, while grumpy Ford actually softens and falls for a girl he learns the name of.

There was a scene with a little bit of O’Kane debauchery – a teaser, really – and Fight Night but the scenes with Ford and Mia? Yes, please. Ford is dirty in the most delicious way *waggling brows*

“I can jerk myself off,” he said casually. Lazily. “Or you could show me what else you can do with your tongue.”

Ford is definitely one of my fave O’Kanes. Right next to Adrian ‘Maddox’ Rios. I was sad that there was no scene with him but there was Ford, so he cheered me up. Plus, he’s swoon-worthy.

“It’s important to you. That makes it important to me.”

Five hedonistic stars!
